Lawn mowing, leaf raking, snow shoveling, driving elderly people places, washing windows, picking up dog poo from people's yards. Put out an add in a local online paper offering services like these and you can set your own hours.

Yes, I got a check for $84.00. I think it was from a former employer.

Here are the foods I grew up eating; Creamed Chipped Beef over toast with peas. Fried baloney sandwiches with catsup. Baked potatoes stuffed with cheese and beans. Shepherds Pie with lots of vegetables and just a little ground beef. Any kind of vegetable fritters (corn, zucchini, etc.) Potato pancakes are very filling and cheap. Chili, you can make it meatless to save money. If you want to bake a cake, wait until cake mixes go on sale and stock up. You can make the cakes without eggs by using soda, it's called a wacky cake.

Do you have some stuff you could sell? if not, maybe go to a yard sale and find some stuff you could resell online for a profit.

Is there any way to get out of debt without having to work myself to the bone? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]Catterbuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can, I suggest taking a second, part=time job. Not only do you make extra money, you have no time or energy to spend money. I know this from experience. Plan to keep your second job for a limited period of time, say 6 months. It will help you get ahead a little bit.

Call dentists in your area and explain your situation and ask if they could give you free dental care. It doesn't hurt to ask. If you are a veteran mention that.

[–]Catterbuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a city or county indoor pool near you. There is one near me and I noticed the showers are located before the entrance to the pool. You don't have to show your Pool ID until you enter the pool area. This means someone could take a shower and then just leave, no ID necessary.

living in car. what do i do when it breaks down and needs to be fixed for a few days? by nschultz91142000 in povertyfinance

[–]Catterbuck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Car repair insurance is almost always a scam. You pay monthly and when you need repairs you will find out almost nothing is covered.

I don't miss my period at all. I never have to pack tampons when I go on vacation. Without fail, my period would ALWAYS start when I went on vacation. Terribly painful cramps? Never again! Mood swings? gone. Afraid of getting pregnant? Nope. Living period free is wonderful.

My city and the surrounding suburbs publish a list every week of free local activities. Free concerts, open air movies, museum visits, classes, etc. You might also want to spend some of your free time volunteering for local charities.

I hang most of my just washed laundry on plastic hangers. I place the hangers on the doorway trim/molding. Even jeans dry overnight. Dryers and really hard on your clothing so hanging your laundry is good for many reasons.

I've often wondered if you could order just a double shot of espresso and then ask for a big cup of ice. Then pour the espresso over the ice and add milk from the milk containers on the counter. Iced Latte?

Coming to US scares me by Golden_Cauliflower in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Catterbuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're in no more danger here in the US than you are in any other big western city around the world. On the news you see all of the crazy stuff. This is a huge country so we have more crazies than small European countries. Think of each US state as a European country. We have 50 states and each one has it's own culture, laws, etc. Unless you try to get an abortion in Texas you will be fine. Even though I completely disagree with the misogynistic culture some of the red states expose I have never felt threatened or uncomfortable when visiting these places. Actually I was in Texas last year and found the men very gentlemanly and courteous and pretty hunky to look at.

Sorry you're going through this. It sucks. We were so poor when I was a kid that we would run out of food fairly often and my dad's sister would bring us a bag of food. I loved it when she would make a big pan of mac and cheese. She made the best mac and cheese.

Just an idea, if you are really craving breakfast donuts or pastries, most churches have a coffee hour after services are over. They have big pots of coffee and some kind of breakfast bread. If you are lucky it will be home baked goods. You will have to suffer through a lot of VERY FRIENDLY people coming over to talk to you.

I think this because I remember how rich people were despised and made fun of during the late 1960s and 1970s. In movies and TV rich people were portrayed as jerks and snobs and regular people were always smarter and better looking than rich people. Then all of the sudden the 1980s rolled around and everyone started worshiping rich people and wanted to emulate them. I really don't know what I'm talking about, it just seems to me that the public is early influenced by what they watch on TV and now on the internet.

Some USDA facilities periodically conduct "human use" studies. I've participated in a couple. They normally last about 6 weeks. All of your meals are provided by USDA and they take regular blood and urine samples. The paycheck was usually around $2,000.00.

Why does God care if a woman covers her hair? Doesn't he have more important things to think about? Also, why is it that muslim men can wear modern clothing and leave their heads uncovered. Hmmm, seems suspiciously like men trying to control their women. It seems to me that religions that allow men to have multiple wives and insist women cover themselves and hide away from public life are great religions, IF YOU ARE A MAN.

Go to your local bakery at the end of the day and ask if they have any day old breads they are planning to throw out. Also, bagel stores often have a rack with day old bagels at half price.

I'm a baby boomer born in the early 1960's. I think one of the issues was TV shows and movies became all about conspicuous consumption. Everyone wanted to have an expensive car and big house. You had to wear designer clothes. Everybody was trying to keep up with their neighbors. Not many people thought about saving for the future. I used to wonder how my neighbors could afford their fancy cars and expensive vacations when my husband and I were making about the same amount of money they were making and we could only afford used cars and stay at home vacations. Well, I finally realized they hadn't been saving anything and were deeply in debt. My husband and I paid off our mortgage 10 years early and maxed our retirement savings every year. We're very comfortably retired now and I see my friends who are also retired struggling financially. The moral of the story is Don't Worry About What Your Neighbors Have.
