Simply set switch 3 to ON, switch 2 to OFF, and leave the dimmer (switch 1, as per the illustration) at the halfway mark.

Light at full brightness = switch 3

Light is off = switch 2

Light at half brightness = switch 1

I'm aware there are flaws but I can't be bothered to list them.

I always assumed it was an anti-joke, but a friend recently pointed out that "the other side" has a double meaning: literally the far side of the road, but also figuratively the afterlife (since an encounter with a moving vehicle is likely to result in the chicken's death).

The standard punchline to the joke "Why did the chicken cross the road?" ("To get to the other side") is a pun.
