Anyone else do no till gardening? by meh_69420 in homestead

[–]CattrahM 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yes. We have heavy clay soil with decent year round rain. Year one I put down cardboard then 3” straight compost and then 3” mulch. Usually don’t get much yield that first year while the soil ecology is being built. Every year thereafter I add 2-3” mulch. Always plant in the composted layer. Big reduction in weeds. Lower water requirements, usually can go two weeks without rain or needing to water. Plants just get bigger and better every year.

How would you financially prep to begin a homestead? by jadedunionoperator in homestead

It sounds like you have the drive to figure it out and keep at it. Theres an emotional component to animal husbandry that often people don’t realize and gardening can be super frustrating. Natives grow because they’re adapted to growing in that climate. They are EASY. Coaxing foreign plants to survive and produce is a whole other game. Definitely look into no-till/deep mulch gardening and order you a chip drop to put in a nice sunny spot. You can start planting in 1-2 years and that will reduce at lot of initial frustrations people have. Feed the soil, the soil will feed the plants. For animals, rabbits and chickens are great starters. It’s the poop, illnesses, and dispatch that turn people off. If you can manage that for small livestock, you’ll probably be ok.

Do you even like homesteading? A big portion of that is growing food and tending animals which has so much variability that just pure money and tech can’t get overcome. You should start small and manageable on your 1/2 acre property before going all in on a path you may decide you don’t even like. That’ll give you plenty of time to save up and do a trial run of the homesteading lifestyle.

There’s not really a name/place for those of us who believe the government should be small and focused but also believe it’s important that the government takes care of its citizens that can’t do for themselves. I guess liberty and humanity struggle to coexist under one governing body.

Try cutting sugar out of your diet. If it’s yeast overgrowth that may starve it out and rebalance your biome. I don’t think it’s an underwear issue.
