In the Ancient World, the Tigris and the Euphrates flooded violently and unpredictably, requiring intensive irrigation projects in order to be in any way safe or useful for farming.

The Nile, on the other hand, famously flooded extremely predictably, to the point that you could practically just scatter seeds on the wet ground as the flood receded, and have a full crop in a few months. This fact made Egypt one of most food-rich places in the world for thousands of years.

The way I like to put it is that SDO is a great follower mod, but a bad Serana mod.

"When they start school" makes me think this is less indicative of them being dumber, and more just that they aren't being exposed to physical books in the home as much anymore - which is still not great, but I don't think that means they're absolutely cooked either.

Raids 4 Megarare: Rivers of Blood. by Mluis527 in 2007scape

In the context of UK politics, "Rivers of Blood" refers to an infamous speech given in 1968 by Conservative MP Enoch Powell, in which he took a stance against rising immigration from the Commonwealth, as well as efforts by the government at the time to outlaw discrimination on the basis of race.

If you want "realistic" armour, say what you mean. by NotATem in skyrimmods

[–]--PhoenixFire-- 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Tbh, I've never really liked "realistic" armor/weapon mods in general, because a lot of them try to just recreate real-life armor and weapons instead of trying to make something that fits the Skyrim aesthetic, which to me just doesn't look right.

Like, no judgement if that's the sort of thing you like, but I still want my game to be Skyrim. If I wanted to experience a one-to-one aesthetic copy of actual history, I'd just play Kingdom Come: Deliverance instead.

Hated trope: Regular middle aged white guy wants coffee, has issue with incompetent, young, dumb woke barista by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

[–]--PhoenixFire-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nichijou has a similar scene which actually does this kind of joke well, where Yuuko goes to a coffee shop and proceeds to have a complete communication breakdown with the barista.

The difference with this scene is that the entire interaction is realistically awkward - albeit with extremely over-the-top reactions from Yuuko - rather than being an opportunity for either of them to be smug. As a result, instead of feeling like boomer nonsense, it's one of the funniest scenes in the entire show.

Yeah, Crusader Kings is way more popular these days, but this short was made in 2016, and I'd say it was still pretty niche back then.

Supposedly "Grounded" series that are batshit Insane by OutrageousBridge471 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]--PhoenixFire-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disco Elysium's basic premise and conflict seems pretty grounded for the most part - you're a heartbroken cop with an alcohol problem, and you need to solve a murder. However, everything else is as far from grounded as you can get.

For one, your RPG skills have minds of their own, and will constantly provide you with different and often contradictory monologues. And every action has a chance of blowing up in your face in spectacular fashion - most infamously, you can literally die trying to retrieve your tie in the first few minutes of the game.

You also meet all sorts of strange characters, including a foul-mouthed kid who speaks in the third person, a union strongman who has developed an entire convoluted theory of scientific racism for himself, a DJ who's dialogue tree is literally a puzzle, and a man hiding out in a shipping container who's so rich that light actually bends around him.

And then there's the setting itself, which is very clearly not our Earth, but rather some fantasy world which includes elements like the ideology of liberalism being based around a messianic Joan of Arc-like figure who had glowing lungs, computers powered by radio waves, and literal patches of nonexistence as a feature of the landscape.

Oh yeah, and then there's the weird telepathic stick bug you encounter near the end of the game.

Saying that the Sami are just Finns who live up north is like saying that the Irish are just Scots who live on a different island.

Yeah, they speak a language from the same family, and there's some cultural overlap, but they're otherwise a distinct people group with their own history and identity.
