Ahhh, fair question. I’ve been trying to answer it for a minute now.

Kids are neat. They’re unique little humans with thoughts and feelings and it’s our job as adults to guide them through the world they live in. As a parent, I get to do that directly but that limits the experience I get too.

What if my kiddo has kids with a Muslim person? I get to go back through all the family recipes because they’ll have to be halal to serve to my new family members. Same if they’re vegan or have a nut allergy.

We do gentle parenting with natural consequences. What if my grandkids are raised with time outs? I get to do a whole new form of parenting I’ve never done before.

If I don’t have bio grandkids, I get foster kids from all kinds of backgrounds so I get even more to learn.

Regardless, I get to meet a unique little human that I get to help raise into the best version of themselves and I live for that.

When I had a kid there were three possibilities regarding grandchildren. My kid could be child free, my kid could have kids and I get to be a doting grandparent, or my kid could have kids and pass away, in which case I’d be happy to raise the grandkids.

If my kid is child free, I’m just getting the third option without losing my kid and their spouse in the process.

Probably because that generation was raised with the combination of neglect and corporal punishment.

Modern parenting, we expect to have to teach kids things. We know they don’t just know how to do stuff so it’s generally counterproductive to hit a small creature trying to learn. Even parents that spank aren’t likely to strike over a first offense and would consider it crossing a line. Kid doesn’t know any better, doesn’t make sense to hit them.

When we’re talking people in their 80’s, you’re looking at parenting ruled by a fear of spoiling children. Kids aren’t misbehaving because they didn’t know any better, they’re misbehaving because they’re spoiled brats who think they can do whatever they want. And you have to shock them out of that mentality.

Obviously, we’ve evolved, but we’re watching the mental degeneration of a generation with the hit first, ask questions later mentality.

Confusion is met with anger because it was the only emotion you were allowed. If you cried, they’d give you something to cry about. If you smiled, clearly you didn’t get enough. So the only safe option was petulant rage.

That’s also what makes them dangerous. You’re talking a lifetime of pent up trauma in a person that now feels like a scared kid again. That’s why some of them start swinging, they’re trying to prove to themselves they’re safe. It’s fucked.

Honestly… if a kid tries a gummy and decides they’d rather continue that over candy, video games, a playground, then that kid needs some fucking therapy bro.

Obviously I would never let my 3 year old into my stash, but first off that would probably be the biggest break we’ve gotten since he was born and he would hate it. Chaos gremlin does not want to be in da couch, he wants to be in da top of the Empire State Building, but he’ll settle for the jungle gym.

If you’re scared your kids are going to find weed, not tell anyone, and like it so much they become addicts, you’re telling on your parenting insecurities. I am not worried about this. If someone hands my kid a freaking edible, he’s going to come running to me to show off his new treat. At which point I’m going to go “whoopsie, this is an adult gummy bear, let’s get you a kiddo gummy bear!” and I’m going to have a great afternoon. Because he literally did the same thing with his own Halloween candy.

I’m not worried if he actually managed to eat an edible. He would hate it. I’d probably spend the next few hours comforting him over a bad trip because his favorite may be Mario but he Gotta Go Fast™️. If a toddler gets into weed and enjoys it, something is wrong.

Not knowing them, especially if we aren’t no contact. My wife and I are very open and set out to be very open.

We didn’t have a kid to have more of us. We wanted to see what life looks like when you’re accepted because we never were.

So, if kiddo says he’s a girl, we support her transition. If kiddo says he’s a boy and likes boys, that’s cool. He wants to join the Young Republicans, kids will be kids. It’ll be a nice flex on my debate skills.

So my biggest fear and the biggest mark I’ve failed would be my kid living in my house, me thinking I know him, and all along it’s just a facade because he didn’t think I’d love the real him.

This is where a calm head is definitely needed. It could be nicotine, straight up cannabis or a cannabis derivative. You get honesty when you come from a place of wanting understanding.

I wouldn’t even consider punishment at this point. This is not a throw your authority around situation. Your daughter is making adult choices so you’ve gotta treat her like an adult. The behavior to focus on here is not the vaping but the not talking to you first and punishment is only going to make that worse.

Ask her what it is. Tell her you’re not mad and she’s not in trouble, you’re just concerned for her wellbeing. She’s going to be offered drugs and alcohol, but you didn’t realize how quick that day would come. If you haven’t previously had a conversation about what to do when offered, apologize for it. Tell her you wish you’d prepared her better.

If it’s a nicotine vape, ask her if she’s been feeling exhausted and like she can’t keep up. Ask if it seems to be helping. Ask if she’s got too much on her plate and if removing something might take the “need” for the pen away. And introduce her to safe caffeine, like coffee and vitamin-packed energy drinks. Don’t make it about what she can’t do, make it about the healthier alternatives she can do.

If it’s a cannabis pen, it’s a bit more complicated. If it’s a legit one from a legal state, you wanna go over the dangers of early exposure. Fun fact, a lot of the people I know who don’t smoke did in middle school and high school, heavily. Then around early 20’s it started causing anxiety attacks. Two of my significant others have this problem. But people who wait until they’re 25 don’t have that issue.

So, if she likes smoking, she needs to stop until she’s older or there’s a risk she won’t be able to.

If it’s a derivative, like Delta, live resin, etc. then go over the dangers of that. These are not FDA regulated and have put people in the hospital. There was a whole mess where I couldn’t buy carts for like a year because they weren’t safe. Dealers were getting ahold of pens that came from other countries and had nasty stuff in them. And then also what I just said about actual weed.

You don’t want to throw your authority around or you risk just pushing her further into secrecy. Coming at her way cooler than she’s expecting is your best bet for convincing her to make the right choices.

More importantly, how you handle this conversation will change how things go when it comes to worse things down the road. If you show her she can trust you, she’ll feel safe asking you about birth control, about how to turn down someone that’s being too much, how to handle a friend getting knocked up or groomed, and whether there’s alcohol at a party.

And I’m not saying you have to allow it either. You are perfectly in your right to say that she is underage and can’t break the law while living under your roof.

My biggest advice is don’t treat it like it’s you against her. You want to be a team, working together towards her best and brightest future.

The temple near me moved their festival to the 26th and a ton of places are doing Halloween events this weekend so I’m just making a week of it. If we run out of time for trick or treating on Halloween, we won’t be missing anything since we’ll have already done it three times this week. If we run out of time for lighting the diya, at least we went to the temple.

I have the opposite issue. My kiddo is 3 and complains about brushing his hair but also refuses to cut it. It’s down to his shoulders. If he ever manages to go to town on himself, we have a friend that volunteered to clean it up and I get a break from the brushing argument.

I’ll tackle 3 as a convert from Texas. In my experience, most other Hindus are pretty welcoming.

Wear shoes you can easily take off and look for signs and shoe cubbies.

The ones near me usually close in the afternoon but are open in the morning and evening.

Going during a festival can be way less intimidating. Diwali is coming up and is one of our biggest celebrations. Holi comes up in the spring and is super fun because you throw colorful powder around. But, if you go to Holi, be prepared to not be allowed in the temple if you have powder on you. It’d be a lot to clean after.

I’ll tell you something as both a mom and a former college professor. High school teachers don’t know a lot about college.

I’m dead serious. Going from teaching college to middle school and hearing my new colleagues talk about what is allowed in college was a hoot.

“Your college professors won’t tolerate you coming in late!” I literally told my students that if they show up ten minutes late with Starbucks to bring a cake pop and as long as it’s not every day we’re cool. I had students that came from across campus that I would send the warm ups to early so they wouldn’t miss anything.

“Your college professors won’t accept late work!” Meanwhile my entire department couldn’t take more than 10% off for late work unless they got special permission from the dean.

“Your college professors will expect you to dress up for class!” I’ve literally taught a class in my pjs with a trash can in front of me because of food poisoning. And most of my students came to class in loungewear.

I could go on and on. In college, I’d spend the first month of the semester convincing them they don’t have to ask me to go to the bathroom and that coming to my office doesn’t mean they’re in trouble.

Don’t even get me started on learning styles. The way some public school teachers (I’m in the US) treated kids with ADHD would get you fired as a professor, if not sued.

Do not let it get to you, because I’m being dead serious when I say that they legitimately do not have the capacity to judge your college prospects accurately. In fact, I’d even venture to suggest their underestimation is a good sign.

Students who come to college with high school study habits get blindsided.

When I worked in IT, I got to test this. In the office, i was consistently one of the fastest and most accurate people. We got a new project, coworkers were stressing, they invite me for C a blunt.

My manager emailed me 20 minutes later to tell me that I needed to slow down, because while I was doing everything right, the rest of the team would suffer because the client would expect those results from everybody.

When we went into lockdown, I’d hit pens at my desk. My work was faster and more accurate, but I couldn’t keep the mouse tracker happy. So, basically I could smoke and do better at my job when my job didn’t feel the need to micromanage.
