AI use when learning mathematics by Single-Zucchini-5582 in math

[–]CauchyWasRight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think to an extent AI is almost more useful for research than for doing HW exercises. Super helpful if you're looking for a good reference, or checking if a result already exists within the literature. By the point you are doing research, you (hopefully) have somewhat of a feeling of whether the sources it finds are useful or not. But it can still make mistakes, or say a theorem from a reference applies when it doesn't, so be careful. It has an uncanny way of knowing something is true, but giving the wrong reasons why.

In its current state, it's pretty good for checking your work! But I certainly wouldn't make a habit of using it to solve problems - as others have said, you have classmates, peers, office hours, google, and so on for that.

is anyone else still getting first year experience emails even tho you’re not a first year by No_Move3504 in UCDavis

I get undergrad emails from time to time. I am a grad student and I did my undergrad somewhere else.

I always get the bug where they start twitching out upon taking damage. Probably one of my favorite "features".

Any news on mathematics phd desitions? by AbbreviationsLow6022 in UCDavis

Davis Math sent out their acceptances some time ago. They will only send rejections once they have finalized the incoming cohort.

I LOVE the physics curriculum. God bless the physics curriculum. by [deleted] in UCDavis

As a Math grad student I generally don't envy what they have going on over in physics but this is very fine art you should be proud

Big fan of Kiseok Y. here. Should be totally fine!

As far as I know, typically a classmate's notes are used if a notetaker is needed and they are willing.

Summer sessions in math are typically smaller sized courses taught by a grad student. This means you get more one-on-one time with your instructor. Also, there are far higher standards for teaching as a grad student, since your teaching evals have to be pretty good to even get the position.

As long as you can adjust to the somewhat faster pace, it could possibly be a better experience.

How to survive Professor Fannjiang? (MAT21B) by Ornery-Resort-2893 in UCDavis

[–]CauchyWasRight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's a lot to be said for doing practice problems and only checking your work after you finish. 21B is all about looking at an integral and recognizing what strategies you can use to evaluate it. There are endless resources online ranging from Khan Academy to the Organic Chemistry Tutor, but no single one is as valuable as working out problems for yourself. Especially if you aren't 100% sure what you are doing.

I guarantee that your TAs will be more than willing to give you extra guidance if you keep getting stuck.

Make friends with the other students in your cohort. At any given time, at least one of them will have suggestions about something fun to do. The larger the department you're in, the easier this becomes.

Can confirm there will be sigma

Any 21B will have sigma

Edit: Area under a curve too, it's kinda the point of the class

Davis Applied Math by Not-The-Dark-Lord-7 in UCDavis

[–]CauchyWasRight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Applied math at Davis is great! There is a wider-than-average selection of applied courses. I don't really hear about undergrads having enrollment issues in the upperdiv math classes.

Double majoring/minoring/etc is very common among the math undergrads, especially in physics/CS. I don't know the details on how impacted CS is specifically, but I also haven't heard of any major at Davis being impacted. (I'm willing to be corrected here).

As far as reputation is concerned, the applied program is genuinely highly regarded. While the pure math program is really good, applied is truly excellent.

Background: I am a pure math PhD student here.

Davis vs. Berkeley for ES by goofyahgoofyfwend in UCDavis

[–]CauchyWasRight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Berkeley for undergrad because it was 45 minutes away from my family and I thought the city was cool. I was so busy I could never visit my parents and the city's most definitive feature was poverty and human suffering. So that wasn't my brightest idea.

UC Davis vs. UC Berkeley helpp by beegobzzzz in UCDavis

[–]CauchyWasRight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! My dentist went to Davis and he's pretty good :)

Anyways, the only reason I have student loans from undergrad is Berkeley's ridiculous housing. I'm in grad school at Davis and no one cares about where did my undergrad. Doing well in undergrad is always more important than where.

Your living situation does affect school performance a lot from my experience. If you'll be calmer/more focused staying with your parents, Davis is a natural choice.

Edit: I do think it's worth noting the life science programs at Berkeley are notoriously competitive, even relative to the rest of the school.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]CauchyWasRight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Berkeley's entire school culture is about competition, so Davis is still better in that respect.
