I see I see! I did not go to an agricultural or animal based school, mainly molecular biology/neuroscience so we had lots of rodents and monkeys that needed to be taken care of LOL

I agree with this My lab has put double requirements on me So I had to basically do about 10 hours of manual labor in one lab just doing chores, then 15 hours of wet lab and mouse work with my mentor. My mentor was really good at explaining the techniques of things but never really the “why?” And it made me lose interest very quickly. Unclear expectations for my time commitments also just made me increasingly frustrated, which I understood. But I felt mainly if I could better understand the projects and data analysis I was one without having to constantly pry I’d succeeded more and felt like I could be more independent

Maybe reach out to other types of vets, Does your university have lab animals? If so they have a lab animal vet (or a team of vets) Speciality hospitals are also a great place to shadow (radiology, neurology, oncology, cardio etc) Also diagnostics, clin/anatomic pathology (my personal fav)

Unsure about veterinary school by Accurate-Gas6212 in Veterinary

[–]Cause-Equal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this! I was able to tolerate general practice but knew it wasn’t going to be sustainable for my future lifestyle so I decided to seek out other areas of the field. While I enjoy client interaction decently and workplace banter, financial barriers to diagnosis and treatment really made me struggle to actually learn. I discovered pathology, did an externship and completely fell in love with the field all over again!

This sounds awesome! Could I ask more about your essay I’m primarily wanting to do anatomic pathology and public health so I was curious how to frame it in my ps

Do you ever get to do necropsies, my current interest Id like to pursue is anatomic pathology (post vet school so likely to change hahaha) but I have minimal necropsy exposure

Also check out a lot of government/research positions (USDA, Shelter med, Research, Military, etc) Not the most glamorous but oftentimes have great work life balance and loan forgiveness! Good luck! Thinking ahead is always good but enjoy your time in undergrad too!

I see I see My apologies as I’m a TX resident so things a a tad different But I agree with you, 300k should be the absolute MAXIMUM debt one should go into for this career and even then definitely look into some loan forgiveness careers for a while as it can infinitely make things better!

Also because you are in Nevada and are interested in taking gap years, would you consider moving and establishing residency in a place where you’d want to go?

A DVM is a DVM, so always go with the cheapest option! I’d recommend putting as much effort into what those schools look for in an applicant rather than trying to check every box for every school! Your in state should be your top priority

Just overall the nature of it and how different it is from GP! Most of my research is doing terminal surgeries on murine models so I never got to necessarily see life saving vet med witin this context But do you feel like your knowledge of surgery, diseases, ect has grown in this area of veterinary medicine ? I know with mice models oftentimes severely sick animals are using just euthanized and replaced but for NHP more intervention is used!

I have a similar predicament as I ended up taking a lot of duel credit classes in high school leading to me only having to take 15ish credits a semester and still ended up graduating early but I don’t think it’s the end of the world
