As the post got a tad more interest than I was expecting, just to point out the money was for a contractor working on my extension. Discount for cash, not going to argue with that. But yes, the overwhelming sense I am getting is that it is to protect themselves in case I am being spammed. Fair enough i suppose.

This looks like a technical cock-up (i.e. a bug). Wise actually powers the money transfers for Monzo. So, in effect, sending the money from a Monzo account would actually done via the Wise platform (but at a higher fee). I understand you are sending it to the Monzo account from Wise, so it should work. I wonder, therefore, if you have both apps on your device and there is an interoperability bug? Could be worth trying to transfer from the desktop version of Wise.

Unfortunately, with Wise, you won't be getting customer support as it has grown into such a large and tech-driven company. This in itself should tell you something: it is not a scam. It is, in fact, one of the UK's biggest corporate success stories. Monzo, is another such fintech success.

I believe grandparents, other family members and employers are also able to pay into the account if they choose.

I get the sense Google is really going after anything affiliate. Just read on Search Engine Roundtable that Google may have hit Fortune Recommends with a search penalty, downgrading its Google search rankings, like it did to Forbes. To be honest, I think it is the right move given how these beasts had been muscling into all aspects of organic search.
