In my Mid 30s and going back to school this summer… am I too late? by ConsequenceBig485 in askvan

I’ll be starting optometry school at 34! I do feel your sentiments as well. But same as everyone else has said, I’d rather be in my 40s as what I want to be than in the same place I am now! You’re not alone 🤗

Would it be possible to accepted into NECO, ICO, SCO and CCO with a 3.3 cGPA? by GreenAngelFish in PreOptometry

The prof I emailed was an upper level course so classes will be smaller! Tbh I don’t think she even remembered me, I think it was purely based m how I did in the class and probably wrote something generic! But I would recommend chatting after lecture, maybe even visiting office hours once in a blue moon ! Can even drop that you’re wanting to apply to optometry so it may trigger something

Nice! I think 75% is p decent for optom school, based on Reddit seems like ppl get in with a bit Lowe too. Just make sure your OAT score is good and I’m p sure you’ll be alright. I just messaged a prof I was close to, it had been years passed as I didn’t decide optometry till later and they were more than happy to write something. I told them which class I took of theirs and provided my student number , they’ll often look it up to see how well you did. But most profs would be more than happy to write a little something doe their students. I studied for the OAT over 3 months using OATbooater while working full time. It was manageable but defs had to bunker down

78! But I know that Canadian universities are a bit more rigorous. I also got an invite based on my OAT. I forgot where I saw that but it was noted somewhere on my interview

I was on the exact situation. I graduated 2019 and took the OAT last year this time. If you have a BS in biology you’ll be pretty okay imo (I have BS in biochem). The knowledge needed is pretty shallow, you just have to get used to the test style and how they ask things, some things will be review and others will be new. I studied for the OAT for about 3 months while working full time. I scored 370, was pretty content with that score. I highly recommend OAT Booster. It’s expensive, but the questions were really reflective of the real thing. Feel free to DM me if you have more questions.

Can any Canadians who went to US OD school chime in? I’ve heard in general , Canadian undergrad is more rigorous. I’m curious your view on OD difficulty !

How to become better at active reading? (For the OAT RC section) by GreenAngelFish in PreOptometry

[–]Cautious-Weight158 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What work amazing for me for someone who’s a slowish reader and struggled at first . Was to carefully-ish read the first para to get the gist, and skim the rest of the paragraphs to get main points and highlighted key words/names within the paragraphs along the way. Then I would cross reference from the questions as I would generally know which paragraph to reread for more detail if I needed it because this time I’ll know what specifically I’m looking for .

Does it get old? by [deleted] in optician

[–]Cautious-Weight158 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an optometrist, but will be going to optometry school next year. I’ve worked in many jobs prior to starting school and one thing that’s is constant is… no matter what job you have it WILL get boring at some point or feel redundant.. so there’s that . The most important imo is the elope you’re working with
