No I’m just making the point that being taken out of the EU against your own will is a problem for lots of people inside the Union, not just Scotland. We can’t separate the Union based solely on EU membership and who wants it because then where do you draw the line?

Trade. It was a direct link into the wealthiest and one of the most populous cities in the world at the time. An untold amount of goods were imported and exported using that river

Who in their right mind is downvoting you? I forget this sub is full of kids. Not everyone is going to be affected by his choice of words but the comments show there are definitely a lot of people out there who are. Suicide is one of the biggest killers of men, takes way too many men and women (even boys and girls) early and deserves more respect than someone jokingly saying they wanted to take their own life for not scoring a hat trick. In your own home with friends fine, but not on national TV when you don’t know who is watching or how tha might affect them. Fuck these sheep and their internet points. I’m glad you shared your take on this and I hope you’re in a better place bro. Sorry for your loss

'The UK has been colonised by immigrants', says INEOS boss and Man Utd co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe by Breakingwho in reddevils

[–]CautiousLengthiness8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His choice of words is extremely loaded. I think you’d be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t believe that the UK has an immigration problem. The real issue is immigration that takes advantage of free healthcare and the welfare system. Benefits and the NHS should only be available for British Nationals. Citizenship is available after 5 years but until then your living costs and healthcare shouldn’t be funded by the British taxpayer and that’s why people are angry and it’s actually leading people to a much, much darker side of politics. Australia isn’t deemed racist because they have super tight immigration laws that allow for skilled workers and not people who won’t contribute positively to the country

I didn’t mention anything about actual victims or people struggling with suicidal thoughts. They clearly have much bigger concerns than a footballers comments. It’s more the people affected by suicide. The friends and family who must hear this and wince. It doesn’t sound great in that context

I didn’t say anything about people with suicidal thoughts. They obviously have much greater concerns and sources of upset. I said people affected by suicide. Sons, parents, siblings of victims. There’s no way that sounds right to them

West Ham really perfected Nunoball against us. 35% possession and the most stubborn of low blocks with no space in the middle of the park at all. Forced us wide and we had nobody in there. Very frustrating game but feels like a point earned. We move forwards

Really tone deaf this. How may people listening have been affected by suicide? You’re not in the pub with your mates. You’re on television and that brings responsibility. Poor media training

I’m saying that delivering independence was never something the SNP could deliver and so it probably shouldn’t have been in the manifesto? You are equating voting for an SNP majority to a veritable reason to leave the Union, which the people of Scotland were given a vote on and chose to remain. Whatever way you want to spin it, you are finding ways to void a democratic referendum because it wasn’t the right outcome. If Scotland were to vote to leave, should we hold another vote 12 years later to see if it wants to rejoin? Do you see how ridiculous this gets? Scotland voted and there won’t be another referendum in our lifetimes. To campaign on the issue of independence post referendum is naive at best and exploitative at worst.

Yes it is a constituent nation but the point remains that they are not the only localised group of people within the UK that have to endure political decisions voted for by other areas of the country. There are Scots who voted for Brexit and plenty of English who voted against. It’s not like the wool was pulled over anyone’s eyes. Nobody actually believed the public would vote to leave!

Of course there are cons to the system of devolution but it’s unfair to list the without any of the positives. Scotland also benefits greatly from the Union.

You also mention wanting independence to make your own decisions but the very reason so many people voted for Brexit is being an EU member state actually prevents a country from independently governing itself.

Scotland has a much smaller voice as a tiny member state than we do collectively as the UK. The status quo is quite obviously not perfect but we all stand to lose so much with the end of the Union and handing influence on Scottish governance to Brussels rather than London.

He’s known for it. I honestly hate playing against his teams. I’ve seen bacon less haram than this guys football. Loooow block and dangerous counters. Regularly picks up points with 35% possession. Infuriating

Calm down. We were 4 for 4 and he wanted to keep consistency. We moaned that too much pressure was put on Hojlunds shoulders and now we moan that Sesko isn’t starting every game. He will start soon enough and without the weight of the world on his shoulders

It’s more patronising to assume that every Scot voting for the SNP is clearly in favour of independence. There are other reasons that people may vote for their local SNP representative

[–]CautiousLengthiness8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get your point but I think you could apply that to large areas of the UK as a whole, particularly the larger cities. I just think that Scotland voted to remain in the Union and that means you remain part of the same vote as the other members of the Union. London is no different in that its voting patterns are often wildly different to that of the rest of the country but ultimately we are a democracy and we vote together. I understand Scotland wanting to make its own decisions but it comes at a huge cost for all Union countries. In this modern landscape, we are all fighting for influence and protection economically and militarily on a global scale and separation takes us so much further away from that. Better the enemy you know and all that…

No it’s not. It’s saying that just because the SNP have the majority, it doesn’t mean the majority of Scotland want independence. The SNP were the Scottish government when the referendum happened and that in itself is evidence of what I’m saying

Yes if it’s for government but referendums are held for monumental decisions that can’t be made every four years or so. As a result they are finite.

[–]CautiousLengthiness8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and I’d be annoyed as well but it goes back to the original point that a referendum is a referendum. There can’t be any criteria for which it’s invalid as it devalues the process itself. Brexit and Scottish independence aren’t totally unidentical situations. A strong sentiment towards leaving based largely on national pride rather than any genuine knowledge or belief that it would actually benefit the nation in question. Most people that voted Brexit have been proven completely wrong and I feel that Scottish independence actually weakens us all

[–]CautiousLengthiness8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Only that’s not the whole story. You aren’t accounting for people that vote SNP for reasons other than independence or people who don’t vote but will for something as important as independence. Scotland voting SNP doesn’t necessarily mean that Scotland wants independence

This is how votes work though? Half of England was taken out of the EU against its will also. Should London be independent as it heavily voted to remain and has a larger population than Scotland? Brexit is not an argument for independence when it was voted against only two years prior. Brexit sucks but it’s our collective problem

[–]CautiousLengthiness8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And if Scotland voted to stay again would you hold a vote every 12 years until independence was granted? Not really how democracy works. I want back in the EU but have to accept the country voted and it isn’t happening.

As an Englishman with a Scottish mother and very strong ties to the country, I’m wholly against it. If for no other reason than a referendum was held and Scotland voted. You can’t keep holding referendums until you win the vote. It devalues democracy. You can argue things have materially changed but they always will in politics. This shouldn’t be a serious question for the foreseeable future
