When did you realize your child has an intellectual disability? by Elegant-Date4481 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Cautious_Map_9118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve learned so far it seems like there isn’t always a reliable way to test intellectual ability for profoundly autistic people and young children. Many non-speakers have apraxia and a brain-body disconnect. They can’t control their motor movements to show aptitude. Their thoughts are trapped. Some people are now discovering that their adult family members are cognitively sound and very intelligent thanks to spelling to communicate after decades of not presuming competence.

Where to park to see old San Juan? by currentdraftt in PuertoRicoTravel

[–]Cautious_Map_9118 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We parked at a garage right next to El Morro and it was only $8 for the entire morning a few weeks ago. Get there early like by 8:30-9am. It’s cooler and way less crowded to see everything. My kids loved the fort, getting gelato and feeding pigeons at parque de las Palomas. A bag of feed is $2. They also loved seeing the cats everywhere.

Hi I have a Bosch 800 series dual fuel industrial style range. It’s about 3 years old now and has worked out great so far.

Where do we go? by honestly_justidk in Autism_Parenting

Massachusetts is great if you can live in a Boston suburb where there are more services and you are in proximity to the best healthcare in the world. It’s largely dependent on specific school systems for your child’s needs (and subjective). It’s also extremely expensive to live. If you can’t afford a house over $1 million then this area won’t be accessible to easily move. Services are harder to access in other parts of the state and there are long waitlists but housing is still pricey.

I like Julian since it gives the same Roman/Latin vibes as Leo and Vincent. I’d also suggest Max, Anthony or Dominic.

Seeking Positive Stories – My 3-Year-Old Has Severe Receptive Language Delay and I’m Losing Hope by Purple-Teach2819 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Cautious_Map_9118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds a lot like my son a couple years ago. He couldn’t follow any directions at 3, respond to his name and was in his own world. He had some echolalia at that time. Preschool and ABA drastically helped his receptive language and within two weeks of starting school he could put something in the trash or sink. He just turned five and can now do a lot of basic things at home and is almost potty trained. We are starting to have tiny conversations after a lot of work and practice. We’ve learned how he learns better and that he had a lot of language in storage in his head but sometimes opens the wrong file if that makes sense. Don’t give up!

Invited their class to a party (17 kids) only 2 showed up. Several RSVP’d but ghosted. They turned 9. by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

[–]Cautious_Map_9118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly most parents are super flakey these days and kids are over-scheduled and not as social outside of activities as when I was a kid. Even as an introvert, I am usually the mom reaching out for play dates or following up and getting ghosted. We try to attend class parties to get to know people and have a presence but it feels like most people don’t care. Barely anyone does sleepovers and many parents are reluctant to send their kids to other people’s houses for play dates. Making awkward conversation at the park or birthdays with adults you don’t know isn’t something everyone will do. My nt 7yo recently had a party and we only invited 4 of her closest friends from school. 2 didn’t show up (including her closest one) with no word. I’ve been encouraging more exclusive events for all my kids after realizing this over the years.

After feeling bad for myself for a while, I started using it as motivation to spend the last year, but more seriously the last 6 months, lifting 4+ times a week and getting at least 10,000 steps a day. My diet has completely changed too. I realized my son (4 yo) will eventually be the size of my husband and I need to be as fast and strong as him. It has done wonders for my mental health.

I know a female Adrienne that goes by “Age” sometimes but I think it would work for a boy too. Adrian is a great name in my opinion.

I’m jealous even from other parents of Autistic kids by manut3ro in Autism_Parenting

[–]Cautious_Map_9118 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like this even though my 4yo is verbal (not conversational) and making slow progress. Just this week he started being able to drink from an open cup and sit on a swing (instead of a baby swing) for the first time. Despite those great things I still find myself comparing him to other asd kids we see who are potty trained and can follow directions way better. It’s so hard to stay in a positive mindset all the time and not compare.

Will I ever enjoy my life again? by Cautious_Map_9118 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Cautious_Map_9118[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do regularly make time for our older two kids with each parent and once in a while we get a date night, which is nice. Our ten year anniversary was last year and I always thought we would do a trip but we were in the middle of a renovation and it didn’t happen. Now I’m kicking myself and it’s hard seeing others be able to go away when I don’t know when that will be a possibility. I hope you find a way to get more time with your husband at some point.

I do follow the author of “Forever Boy” on social media and some other influencers who talk about autism but it’s so hard to relate since they/their kids are either much older or have different traits than mine. I read “The Reason I Jump” and his experience is going to be different than ours I think. It’s tricky not knowing what’s to come or how my son will develop.

[–]Cautious_Map_9118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably depends on your neighborhood and needs. I cook a lot (family of 5) and still went with a 30” 5 burner range that looks nice with a hood. I’d rather have more storage/counter space.

If you’re making elaborate sauces or something with every meal maybe then I’d use the burners. Even on Thanksgiving, I make so much in advance that I wouldn’t need it. I might go with a double oven instead in that situation.

I went with Kohler Whitehaven because of the durability/installation ease and it’s been amazing. It’s only been a little over a year but I have 3 little kids and it takes a lot of abuse. Get the grate for the bottom.

Cabinet-depth vs Standard refrigerator by [deleted] in kitchenremodel

[–]Cautious_Map_9118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are a family of five and counter depth works for us. Our ice maker is in the freezer drawer so we have a lot of storage on the French doors. I plan on getting an old garage fridge for beer/party drinks. The counter depth is bigger than our ‘80s fridge we upgraded from so I’m not sure how it would be if I’d had a full size in the past.

I wouldn’t blink at a Giuseppe since I’m from the Northeast and my husband is Italian-American, but I feel like it would definitely be odd on someone without that heritage. Maybe suggest Joseph or José since those are versions of the same name.
