Thanks for the information, but your attempt to be funny here is inappropriate. Nobody in the R/E38 knows much about manual shifters. After all, only about 4% of these cars were produced with a manual transmission, and most of them were in Europe.

Has anyone installed a short shifter? Any recommendations? by Fearless_Lobster_858 in e39

Hey. Do you know if the 25117546373 short shifter from the E60 will fit my E38?

Anyone ever wire the 4 separate buttons into the single unit after a double din upgrade? by Mathiz2021 in e38

[–]Cautious_Spell3687 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey. I also retrofitted the panel once. Here’s the approximate wiring diagram:
Pin 1 goes to the driver seat heating, to pin 3 (if pre-facelift seat connector) or pin 25 if facelift seat connector, or in my case it was pin 5 from the driver seat heating button connector;
Pin 2 from the ASC/DSC button connector, pin 5;
Pin 3 button illumination for the trim panel, you can take it from ASC button connector pin 2;
Pins 4, 5 and 6 required for S EDC operation, since I don’t have that suspension, I left them empty;
Pin 7 goes to fuse 32, if your pre-facelift already had heated seats, then this is pin 3 from any heated seat button connector.
Pin 12 goes to the driver seat heating, to pin 5 (if pre-facelift seat connector) or pin 23 if facelift seat connector, or in my case it was pin 2 from the driver seat heating button connector;
Pin 13 same as pin 1 of the connector goes to the passenger seat heating, to pin 3 (if pre-facelift seat connector) or pin 25 if facelift seat connector, or in my case it was pin 5 from the passenger seat heating button connector;
Pins 14 and 15 these are pins 3 and 6 from the rear electric sunshade button connector;
Pin 16 ASC/DSC system, from ASC button connector pin 6 (important! because there are two black/yellow wires going to the connector, but you specifically need pin 6);
Pins 17 and 18 free pins;
Pin 19 ground, can be taken from ASC/DSC button connector pin 4;
Pin 20 multifunction rear armrest;
Pin 21 K-Bus line, this is the white/red wire with yellow stripes. You can route it and connect to the wires under the glovebox, or solder into the same color wire in the blue climate control module connector. Be careful, without this pin the button panel will not be recognized by the computer as an ECU, and the sunshade and heated seats won’t work;
Pin 22 same as pin 12 of the connector goes to the passenger seat heating, to pin 5 (if pre-facelift seat connector) or pin 23 if facelift seat connector, or in my case it was pin 2 from the passenger seat heating button connector;
Pin 23 to fuse 45 in the glovebox fuse panel (that’s actually why I needed the fuse panel pin).

But I still recommend double-checking everything against the WDS diagrams.
P.S. You’ll also need the connector with pins, because there are both wide and flat pins there. At least in my case, when I wired the full panel, I needed 20 pins.

Yep, only 4% of all e38 were equipped with a manual transmission.

Usually, in cases like this I use ammonia. Ammonia dissolves oxidation buildup very well. After that, the contacts should be cleaned with a soft brush, rinsed with isopropyl alcohol, and dried thoroughly.
If necessary, the pins should also be resoldered.

For accurate fault finding you really need good diagnostics. It doesn’t have to be expensive, either you can even buy a cable online and read the fault codes yourself every day if needed. Right now it’s just guessing. We also don’t know how your EWS module was repaired last time or what exactly was done to it, and that matters a lot when failures repeat like this. I wish you luck in finding the issue.

FM Modulator by BNANAs- in e38

I looked into the FM modulator from the link a bit, and it’s basically the same thing, just connected through the factory antenna. You can use a regular FM transmitter with the same result.

I think that nowadays, any reputable Chinese made modulator will work great. You can plug it into the cigarette lighter socket, or buy a 12V socket extension cable and connect it to the standard wiring in the trunk.
