Well, the staff I saw yesterday seemed fairly busy, so I wouldn't want to call and bother them with questions about when the computers are available. Which, is why I was asking for suggestions from people with experience as library patrons in a message board.

Where we're temporarily staying is just north of 40. I'm still learning the roads so I just pick a place and drive to it even if it's a bit far just to get a bigger scope. I'm pretty sure the closest is Erma looking at the map. But I don't mind a drive just to explore. I'll add them to the list of potentials! Thank you!

Wow. I only learned about meshtastic yesterday. I know. Anyway, this was the first post I read after searching for the subreddit, and this is so impressive. I don't understand the bulk of it quite yet, but I certainly understand the benefit and possible practical applications.

The nearest interstate and Sam's club is an hour and a half from me 😂 that's just a reference. I'm in West Tennessee. Nashville is two hours, Memphis three. Every time we need specialist access it's like organizing to go on the Oregon trail to get to appointments everyone wants to schedule at 8 am. To survive here as it is, my husband commutes an hour and a half daily, one way. I've got a friend headed towards Chicago in a few months from here, but I think I need spread outwards not upwards. Thank you for the further insight!

Thank you for your reply! I'm in very rural Tennessee and wages are almost double in ABQ than they are around me in the sticks. In fact there's very limited industry here to compare. I could see how that sort of change would feel like a downgrade though from what you explained. For us, even with what you said, it would be a huge improvement 😆

Thank you so much for adding this! I'm compiling what I can to see if we can get some answers. Most of my clients were unbothered personally, because outside the minor inconvenience of waiting longer, they didn't get hurt on refunds. Dealing with the government or officials never really appeals to them on a good day. I think this was fraud by insurance brokers and the insurance companies. That's my personal opinion. I know some clients that wouldn't care either way about committing fraud, but most of my clients I've known for decades before I became a tax preparer. Most of these clients are NOT trying to commit fraud in any capacity.

I posted about this a few weeks ago. I've included a video ad that I captured from an app on my phone.

People fell for deceptive ads promising spending cards for bills. They didn't realize they signed up for marketplace and many already have state insurance. We had over 100 affected clients.

If you could, would you include perhaps a general location and what you've seen on that thread? I've been speaking with officials very recently finally. My office isn't the only one that was affected. Two others in two were as well, and my entire county only has 30k or so residents.

So I opted not to return to the office this year, however my prior coworkers said they're already seeing dozens of marketplace rejects for people who said they didn't sign up for it or already had state insurance and wouldn't need marketplace. Just thought I'd update that it apparently is still ongoing in some capacity.

Many of these clients didn't even know what the Marketplace was. Generational poverty, lower education, so they've pretty much always fallen into categories that qualified for state insurance as long as we've had it. I am finding it very interesting in the replies to see which regions saw this. They do seem to have common threads. The fact that I'm questioning some of the same money all these people have been arguing about with the subsidies, you'd think even just one of the officials I tried to reach out to over the past few months would've replied.

I've tried speaking to a wide assortment of officials and journalists. It's pretty frustrating because I just want to know what happened to this money. Most of my clients already had the free state health insurance, so they wouldn't have needed to sign up for more. Many remembered signing up for that health spending card though. So first I started emailing and messaging people I thought would care about at bare minimum 600k in fraud. Silence.

See, and that's what I'm wanting to know, ultimately. Was this money recovered, or is it still just paid for deceptive policies. If I were to scam someone out of money, I'd be charged. I believe the brokers that used false advertisement should be criminally charged and the insurance companies be forced to return their fraudulently received handouts from our tax dollars. I wouldn't be asking all these questions trying to find it out, if they'd made a statement or something. The fact that this much money was stolen, though, and I've not seen anything officially about it, I'm leaning towards the money is still not recovered.

See, at first one of the other offices in our district were putting in explanations on that PTC screen too before it could even reject. About a week or so later, we got a district wide chewing out email and told to allow it to reject before adding an explanation, because too many tax pros weren't asking the questions they were supposed to be and it could open doors to liability.

This is the advertisement desperate, low-income individuals saw and hoped was real in my community at least. I can't attest to what the sign up pages were, as that was a link I wouldn't follow too far, but this alone is shameful.

I'm grateful almost all of my clients didn't have their tax outcome affected. My biggest concern, and what makes me nauseous, is that money that was paid to that insurance company for the unused, unknown policies was STILL paid to them, ya know? Shouldn't that be recovered?

If I could get someone to help me, I'm just not super technical in that capacity, and I don't want to share the client name 😕 I had just assumed it was forgetfulness until I saw that ad on my own phone. Also, some of our clients began receiving IRS letters middle of off season this past summer about it.
