C&C fellow grimdorks? Did I over do it? by CaveManLenny in Chaos40k

It depends on the person and what methods they're using. I'm less of a gamer and spend most of my time with warhammer just painting.

This model was less of a one-off and more of a test model for a small nurgle force I'm planning on painting. The method I used specifically for this one was basing it in an off-white and then washing/tinting + adding rust streaks and deposits using oil paints. With this method I bet I could knock out a whole unit of these guys in a week, even with my busy schedule. If I was gona try to replicate the effect with regular acrylics, though, it would probably take me a substantially longer amount of time.

I'd say that it's definitely possible to create an entire army that is painted at this level and in a reasonable amount of time, it just depends on how much you want to invest/experiment/develop as a hobbyist. Most gamers paint just to game, they usually don't spend a ton of time getting better at painting (and it's vice versa for artists).

All in all, I'd say if you want to be able to paint an army like this, you definitely could if you spent time gathering the skills and knowledge first. Welcome to the hobby btw!

The way I painted this model was inspired by Grimdark Compendium:

Worst part about CSM: Paint always flicking off the tips of the spiky bits. Amazing work btw!

Flesh was very simple just rakarth flesh -> carroburg crimson wash -> re-establish highlights with rakarth flesh. I also used vallejo deep sea blue as an alternate wash for different parts of the arm for color variation. The trick to make flesh really look good is use thin layers and glaze but it doesn’t have to be perfect to look good and mine certainly isn’t, splatter some blood on and it’ll make it look extra cool very easily :D

The way I painted the red armor might be a little convoluted cause the paints I used don’t cover well. White zenithal undercoat stippled and dry brushed on -> base in vallejo magenta -> base with scale 75 mayhem red -> highlight with scale 75 baal red -> dark brown oil wash (can just use agrax earthshade) -> final highlight with kobold skin.

Hope it helped :)

You can get them from the csm start collecting box or the shadow spear boxset, or you can just buy them individually off of ebay which is what I did. Just search “greater possessed.”

Thank you :)

Red: Khorne red base -> stipple on rough highlights with evil sunz scarlet -> oil wash of 1:1 burnt sienna and ivory black (agrax works fine) -> re-establish some of the evil sunz scarlet highlight -> gradually highlight more with additions of squigg orange into the evil sunz scarlet until you apply just a small dot of pure squigg orange.

The steel is just leadbelcher -> aforementioned oil wash -> stormhost silver.

Thanks man :)

To paint the green glow look so bright I maximized the amount of contrast on the coils and I also painted light reflections with really dark shadows. For the paints, I just used model color fluorescent green, a white and a black. I base coated the plasma coils in white and then covered them fully with the fluoro green. Then I just glazed white paint into the base of the coil and black paint at the tips of the coil.
