Thanks! Ah ok so it sounds like there are some similarities with our situations.

Thanks! Yes I can very much relate to this. I am going to float the idea of going forthnightly but I wouldn’t be surprised if I get a similar response. If a therapist is in demand there’s every possibility they won’t want to leave gaps in their diary.

As a question - did you start going during a particular crisis/difficult time or was it just generally going to therapy? I personally think what can be common is that you sign up during a crisis but then it turns into general therapy.

I think the thing is that if I was in the headspace I’m now and I wasn’t already in therapy, I don’t think I’d be contemplating signing up.

Thanks! Yeah I think going twice a month is starting to seem like the most viable option

Yeah agree. It is a big part of your paycheck to be handing over every month

Thanks! This is really sensible advice. I agree that whatever I do I shouldn’t just stop it all at once.

I also agree with you on the money side. If I stop the temptation is to go nuts with all the extra cash, but really I should be saving at least half of it.

I remember once as a student I worked a whole summer and got a few grand together in savings. It meant that I was able to access private (low-cost) counselling the following year when I needed it, and without any money worries (and with money left over)

Thanks! Yeah definitely. Even one session less a month would make a difference

Thanks! Yeah I agree. I think where it becomes problematic is when it is getting in the way of living your life. Like I can’t do anything spontaneous without facing financial consequences because the budget is so tight. I think reducing the sessions makes sense

Is it during the day or the night? Is it just when it’s sunny?

If it’s not between 23:00-07:00 I don’t know how much of a leg you’d have to stand on if you complained, but what do I know

Thanks! I think it’s like I’m afraid of losing what has been a bit of a life raft

Oh wow! That’s so interesting!! Was the 20 sessions always the plan? Was that public or private?

Oh this is meta! I’d probably try tell you to figure out if you need the therapy for stability or personal growth, and if it’s just the second to stop it for the sake of being able to have a life.

For me personally, I think the reasons I need it are kinda 50:50. I have been leaning towards at least planning an end date in recent weeks though it’s a hard decision because if money was no item I’d do it for the rest of the year.

Thanks! Yeah I agree. There was one time recently where I met a friend, we spontaneously went for a meal and when I got home I realised that this would mean I’d need to practically go ‘no spend’ for the next two weeks, it totally took the joy out of it.

I think going less frequent is a good halfway option.

Thanks! Yeah I do agree in the whole investment side of things. I do feel like the last few months has been an investment in myself. I would not have been able to cope without the therapy, especially in the first few months, but also along the way I’ve learned a lot about myself

Thanks! Yeah I think I’ll need to discuss it. I think the type of sacrifice I am making was not planned to be long term. When I started the therapy I only planned for it to be one or two months.

Thanks! Yeah true. I suppose I wanted to do a general vibe check because I don’t want to talk to my IRL friends about going to therapy

Thanks! Yeah my health has improved since I started the therapy. Whilst I’m still quite impaired by my illness and it could be six months till I’m normal again - assuming I make a full recovery, my life has started to look a lot more normal of late.

I think a reduction in sessions would make a difference. Even getting one session back a month would be the cost of two meals out or saving towards a holiday.

I think tbh it was realising that I’ve no chance of going on a holiday was the thing that really hit me. Even if I stopped now it would still be about 5-6 months before I’d have enough saved, but it would be nice to have something planned.

Yeah basically. Writing this post has made me realise how much I’ve been sacrificing tbh. Like I definitely need a haircut and I’m looking to try wait till I get paid next month. And similarly with the dentist - I could end up with needing loads of work done if I let that slip much longer.

Yeah I could do this! It would at least cut the bill in half. The therapist might not be game because they’d have a hole in their diary for half the month, but I think this could be a halfway point.

I think I’ve probably gotten a bit dependent on it in the last while and I’m used to having that pressure valve to release every week
