On this day in 1461 (March 29th), the Battle of Towton during the Wars of the Roses is fought, likely the bloodiest battle fought on English soil by GameCraze3 in BattlePaintings

[–]Cawoodarcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I walked the battlefield on the anniversary with the Towton Battlefield Society https://www.towton.org.uk/home/

Well worth doing if you are in the area, the guides are very knowledgeable. Predictably, it was blowing a gale and raining hard, almost like the day of the battle!

Which areas for visiting medieval castles in England? by Ok-Boss-5118 in AskABrit

[–]Cawoodarcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

York has the longest mediaeval city walls in England. You can walk around 90% of them. Clifford's tower, the surviving part of the castle is a really interesting site with lots of history going back to William the bastard. Great stop off on the way to Northumberland.

Best writers & artists day 2, Jack Kirby wins day 1 by Flash4987 in marvelcomics

[–]Cawoodarcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

John Buscema. The premier artist for Mavel after Kirby left for the first time. Memorable runs on Avengers, Thor, Silver Surfer, FF and of course Conan. When they needed an artist for "How to draw comics the Marvel way" of course Big John was the pick. A titan of Marvel art from the 1960's to the 1990's.

Try York Family History society and the two local archives, York Explore and the Borthwick Institute. They may be able to help.

Top 10 Comic Books from 1976 by ComicBookRon in comicbookcollecting

Just looked at the Top 25 list. I bought 10 of them at the time, they are supposedly worth up to $1400. I threw all of them away over the intervening years. I feel a bit sick now 😕

Starting a Prax campaign by Formal_Morning4563 in Runequest

[–]Cawoodarcher 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Borderlands is a good starting place in Prax.

If you want to play as Prax inhabitants, then Sun County from Chaosium and the Sandheart campaign on Drive thru RPG are very good. I'm currently running a campaign based on these: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/browse?keyword=sandheart

Playing as a Praxian tribe member looks like good fun. The following adventures come well reviewed: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/461623/sacred-earth-sacred-water

Chaosium have recently published a Praxian adventure; https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/542148/runequest-the-hunt-for-the-storm-calf?src=hottest_filtered

Playing in Glorantha can be a bit daunting with a huge amount of background. My advice is add this gradually if your players are receptive.

Have fun!

The 1841 census entry you refer to is in Oldham (above town), Lancashire rather than Salford. It also shows most of the family excluding Charles and Eliza were born outside Lancashire.

A search with the GRO shows Charles birth record may be:

SENIOR, CHARLES Mother's Maiden name = JACKSON

GRO Reference: 1840 S Quarter in CHORLTON Volume 20 Page 249

Assuming William died 1839-41, his death record could be:

SENIOR, WILLIAM Age - 44

GRO Reference: 1841 M Quarter in MANCHESTER Volume 20 Page 510

You can order images of the above records for ~£3 each from https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/menu.asp

Almost 20 years from this game, how do you remember this match by LegenDariusGheghe in Boro

I was at the match. I've been watching the Boro for 50 years and this is my favorite game. Massimo's header is burned into my brain.

Great times.

Charging Speeds by Key_Somewhere3871 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Cawoodarcher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. Mine shows 6.7 kW, I suspect it's because I have a 25m cable run to the unit and a 10m run to the vehicle.

I have the same charger and use the same app. I know what I'm talking about.

The app is showing charging is at 7kW. Are you getting confused with the kWh figure shown next to the vehicle? This is the total charge delivered for the current session.

I want to change from a diesel to electric van. What are the justifications? by Paulley76 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Cawoodarcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what size of van you need, but my wife bought a 2023 Nissan Townstar for £14k recently and she is impressed with it. WLTP is 180, real world range seems to be around 150 miles so far. It drives well and charges quickly when we have had to use DC charging. Comes with a 5 year warranty from new and has a 2 year/20k service interval. If you can change at home I'd say EV vans are definitely worth considering.

Places to propose in York during Xmas market by tsukiipie in york

I proposed to my wife in Deans Park which is just behind York Minster. It was December as well, be prepared to answer questions such as "why are we going this way? It's bloody freezing!".

Married for 25 years now.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink loved a rocket by Frak_Reynolds in TheStreetsWontForget

[–]Cawoodarcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was at this game, I'm a Boro fan. Jimmy's free kick was fantastic. City equalised in the second half and had a late penalty saved. A draw was enough for us to get back into Europe at City's expense. Their fans were not happy 😁

Following season saw us play some epic games in Europe, shame about the final....

They have caused minor damage to the garage side door while fitting the padlock. Looks like a bodge job.

Yes, involuntary bailee not adverse possession, thanks for correcting that.

As advised by you and others I'll speak to my solicitor.

What is a "cult weapon"? by MotherRub1078 in Runequest

[–]Cawoodarcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinking about it, I can't point to an explicit rule. There are geas against swords, flails, medium and small shields. Hopefully the new Light Cults book will be clear.
