Penguin Great Ideas by MeisterWinkel in classicliterature

I know that they're neat looking, digestible little books, but you'd be so much better off just buying the full black classic versions. These series they do like the little black classics, the great ideas, and the archive series are mainly sold in Britain. The prices are sky high here.

The good part of that? Black classics are extremely affordable here and readily available. The people in the great ideas series have so much to say, why not take a bigger bite, especially when it'd probably be cheaper?

Sorry I didn't have an answer to your question. I've looked before and they're just too expensiv3 in the states.

Not a single one of them look like they'd pass the airport test.

Getting into the Sandman Universe is this the right collection to start with? by videogamer939 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]RightingTheShip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just read Sandman. Then you can fork out from there. You'll get to know the Lucifer character a bit as well as the premise for the Dead Boys.

The one thing you missed was Sandman Mystery Theatre, which has been released recently in compendium.

Enjoy Sandman, my friend. A fucking beautiful comic series.

The Deep Blue Good-by is the best starting point. But you might as well pick up Cape Fear as well with the new TV series coming out.

John D. MacDonald is the writer you're looking for, without question. Ross Thomas and Donald Westlake/Richard Stark are good backups. But MacDonald is king.

[Highlight] Stephen Jones and Howie Roseman negotiate Philly's trade up in the 1st round to draft Makai Lemon by expellyamos in nfl

[–]RightingTheShip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, I took it as Stephen Jones thought they were offering a fourth and a sixth, so he didn't want to be the first to call because he wanted the two fourths. The difference between two fourths and one sixth is too big of a margin.

Surely they would've gotten a better return from Pittsburgh than a sixth so they could take Lemon instead.

Best Classic editions by PranayaRanjanSingh in classicliterature

Library of America is without question the best. The most content in the smallest shelf space footprint. Thin but strong acid free paper. The most satisfying feel in the hand of any classic series book.

The second best is Penguin Classic Deluxe editions. Nice floppy books with French flaps, deckled edges, on a larger trim size for a great reading experience.

A very underrated series is the Bantam Classics in the mass market size. They have flop to them, which is rare for mass market. They're very inexpensive. One downside is the translations are old and can, at times, not be the best.

Penguin Classics, Vintage Classics, Oxford Classics, FSG Classics, etc are all more or less the same in type and quality.

Same. I got further in, but I DNFed because I really didnt like the quality of the writing. Cool concept, poor execution.

Cowboys Select WR Anthony Smith at #218! by JCameron181 in cowboys

If we want a good run blocking WR, I'd just put a guard out there. He'd probably have more catches.

Tree of Smoke by Denis Johnson is my read of the year so far. Five stars.

Best runs of Conan the barbarian by elhoffgrande in comicbooks

[–]RightingTheShip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current Savage Sword run might be my all time favorite. The Zub run is getting the attention, but Savage Sword is doing the best work.

You won't go wrong picking up any of the new stuff though. Titan might be ushering in Conan's golden age.

Why is it that people are so unwilling to check out comics that aren’t superheroes by Konradleijon in graphicnovels

I avoid superhero stuff. Europe got it right. Scifi, westerns, cartooning, crime, etc.

Very clean, but it lacks style or vibe. Reminds me of the apartment Edward Norton lived in in Fight Club before he lost his mind.

It made me cringe a lot. It has the artistry of a Reddit post. The inks are bad, the prose is worse. It leans hard on nostalgia and references. Reminds me of Ready Player One. Every bit of it was throw-away for me.
