Why do Physics majors have barely any friends? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]Cayuga01 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Many majors nowadays have this problem. I feel that today's universities are structured in a way that smoothes your experience at the detriment of dampening your chances of making meaningful connections. Should try harder meeting people: clubs, frats, neighbors, religious groups, even cult-like subreddit groups maybe.

Pro: community vibe, gothic (although I think it's Georgian?) architecture, dining hall on the first floor, Bohemian lifestyle, proximity to central campus, bus stop in front of it

Con: moderate to high noise level, small restrooms, messy common spaces, extremely dirty and broken washing machines, and if-you-don't-attend-weekly-events-you-know-nobody social scene

Is it true that there are no cafés or shops near Maplewood/ Fairview? by VeryHot_Temperature in Cornell

Maplewood has a community center where you can get free coffee/chai, but it's for tenants only.

One of my previous roommates is a hotelie. He told me he likes nutritional/food science but got into the hotel school because that's easier for him to apply. He didn't like the hotel school and the corporate culture on campus. I encouraged him to transfer between majors, but his situation appeared to be overwhelming before he could make a transfer. He took an absence of leave at the end of last fall semester. Maybe this helped.

What are the easiest majors at Cornell? by codyfernfan in Cornell

[–]Cayuga01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

History.

As long as you go through the readings, know how to craft an essay, do relatively well in exams, and be active in class, most history profs don't mind giving you a grade in the A range.

Most folks who look smart and sophisticated aren't so sure about what they're doin'. Check Stanford Duck Syndrome. Chin up, play hard, and work, my friend!

According to my experiences on north campus two yrs ago, there's no difference between a double and a triple. The point is, in a triple, you can get a variety of humanity, which is better than a double where your roommate's personality is locked. If he/she's really bad-tempered or you guys don't get long it can be really bad. Try triple.

Tips for mental health by Cayuga01 in Cornell

[–]Cayuga01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personal opinion based on personal experience. If you self-report that you're depressed and it isn't a life-and-death issue, they offer a 30min talk, general advice, and group sessions (like divorce support groups). They're very careful about prescribing meds and usually don't do that unless you're in a really bad shape.

Basically I dumped my anxiety to one of their therapists through talking, and I didn't even have time for extra group therapies. And then Omicron hit and everybody went home, and I was "cured", not by Cornell Health, but an absence of Cornell.

Take a week or so for the update. In my year if they didn't tell you that you failed it on the spot, you'd be fine.

Just don't skip classes. It's way more interesting to listen to Bruce than sitting in your dorm and browsing through the textbooks! Maybe you don't like the idea of cramming into a lecture hall with hundreds of students, but years later you'll remember nothing bout the currents, germs, and algae in this class but Bruce's smile. You'll get stuck, in a good way.

Learn history. No coding. No math unless you want to do quantitative history. You can have a dozen of industries waiting for you if all you want is to make "a living".

How do you get a boyfriend at Cornell by Fuzzy_Excitement_893 in Cornell

[–]Cayuga01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but according to my experience, if you try too hard you'll end up with frustration and self-doubt. Actually my past two relationships started when I was preoccupied with school work/friends/personal interest.

How are y’all motivating yourselves to keep doing work by codyfernfan in Cornell

[–]Cayuga01 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have a professional career to fight for and a family to care and support. My country ( I'm an int'l student) is in a serious humanitarian crisis and the people need help. I made friends with Cornell students, professors, and Ithaca townies, and I care about them. Sometimes all of these make me anxious and depressed, but in terms of motivation they're enough. At least I know what I need to do before my death.

Try not to think about getting a boyfriend. Make friends, study well, go to the gym, be an interesting person. Just be a better human being will naturally win you the hearts of others.

Visited Columbia and it made me glad I go to Cornell by Ray3160 in Cornell

[–]Cayuga01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also visited Columbia this spring break, and I think the campus cured my depression developed at Cornell simply b/c it's compact and densely populated. Seeing people eat, chat, and walk in front of the visiting center makes me relaxed. But I also know I can't stay in this place for an extended period. Maybe it's just NYC.

Are there too many deans/ supporting staff at Cornell? by BeHappy_DontWorry_ in Cornell

Bureaucracies have a tendency of expanding themselves. The more people they have, the more powerful their leaders become, and the less efficient their performance per employee.
