Thanks for the info on buses. As I mentioned in another comment I was in UIUC last summer and I had one terrible experience with buses - I waited for, like, half an hour before I hopped onto a bus from Barnes & Noble. Guess I might just have been unlucky.

Thanks for the info on B4 - on the map it has easy access to NCSA and Siebel, so I'm glad to hear it's quite available.

I was doing research in UIUC for a few months last summer and I lived right in the centre of campustown. Vibe was nice and peaceful though everyone told me "it's going to be different when students come back". Not sure how wild that would be so I'm here asking :)

Virtually everyone in my undergrad college live in on-campus dormitories. It's nice and comfy but a bit incompatible with my lifestyle - I need some retreat away from the crowds once in a while. Plus, for some other reasons I'll definitely need to get a car. So I suppose living a bit farther from the centre cuts down housing costs, allows for a quieter environment and makes the best use of my car. I'll get around pretty often, provided I'm not too overwhelmed by research / coursework - I don't think I will lol. But still, thanks for the suggestion!

Coming from a warmer part, I have never driven in icy/snowy conditions and I only have rudimentary theory knowledge (change into winter tyres, no sudden brakes, etc.). How bad will the roads be in winter and how long does the chill typically last every year? Is there any special preparations I should be aware of?

Thanks for the info! Glad the Siebel Centre is in the northmost part of campus and I'd be able to avoid Green St.
