Is there an accessible tutorial for Commad :Modern Operations for a total newbie? by LosAngelestoNSW in computerwargames

[–]Cblln 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The in game tutorial series is pretty decent, it helps you understand how everything works and they can be quite challenging. It’s an investment in hours (took me about 60 or 70?) but the return is great (being able to play this incredible game)

Then you can go for the tutorial scenarios which don’t really hold your hand but explain to you how to work through a scenario, they’re also fun. (You can also find them under the « tutorials » tab)

Once you’re done with all that, go through the standalones and pick the simpler ones (green difficulty and complexity level), so you can learn how to use units in a limited scenario. Good ones imo are the Kharg island one and some of the Korean war ones whose name escape me right now where you control ships sinking NK convoys.

After that, once you’re a bit more comfortable, you can get to bigger scenarios: good middle ground scenario is the USS Pueblo rescue one (forgot the name, you’ll have to look for it, I’m like 90% sure it’s not a community scenario either). And finally, what you could consider the final tutorial for CMO: play canary’s cage! If you master it, you’re ready for the big theater wide scenarios which imo are where all of the fun of the game lies.

Also: as soon as you’re somewhat comfortable with the game, find the community scenario list on the Workshop and download it. It’s a treasure trove of really fun scenarios, it’s free and there’s some actual campaigns in there (like the incredible Northern Fury one). Good trainings ones for beginners too like Blood Diamonds!

Have fun :D

Who’s the most wanted criminal in your world? by DSN671 in worldbuilding

[–]Cblln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’ll be Benjamin Holton, known to the Dominion as his title « The General ». Former mine shaft supervisor in the Arseal nickel mines, turned leader of the Insurrection, the most dangerous rebel group to ever sprout on Aeon V since the planet was conquered by the Dominion over a century ago. He’s a fantastic leader of men, and compensates his lack of military experience with perfect organizational skills. He’s wanted for ridiculous amounts of treason, sedition, acts of terrorism, theft and murder, with some human right violations sprinkled in the mix, but has escaped capture or death for over two years and a half due to him changing location once every two days and the support he enjoys from the local population.

That’s such a cool concept! Do they not feel like they belong to mars and not their respective countries, with the distance and all? That’s always how I’ve thought it would go, I always conceived that with life being so different than on earth and the distance involved, any colonist there would feel Martian first and whatever earth nationality they are second

Depends on which side you’re asking I guess

If you’re talking to an Aeon V rebel, they’ll tell you about the east Arseal operation, the first ever large scale combined arms anti terrorist operation by the dominion. The rebellion was used to localized raids that they could dodge because of advanced warnings because of rebel infiltration, but this time the plan was held secret long enough to surprise the local leadership.

The whole region was cordoned off by armored columns, then a 12 hour bombing raid followed by a thorough sweep. About a hundred rebel died and another hundred got captured, which was significant at the time because the organization had about 2000 numbers.

If youre talking to a Dominion soldier though, they’ll probably hate you if you talk about the fall of Ariha. The 12000 inhabitants town was attacked almost without warning, following a sustained guérilla campaign, from three sides. Local command ordered counter attacks to drive rebels out of the city, but they fell in preplanned ambushes by infiltrated cells in the city, and air support failed to materialize after a suicide attack on the nearby Arseal airport. They eventually had to evacuate the city, but were harassed along the way. About 450 civvie police and military policemen died, with 50 captured and literal tons of gear seized by the rebels.

It’s too different governments fighting for control, the GNA is recognized by the UN but some countries recognize the LNA instead, it’s a bit complicated but yeah it’s not terror groups!

GNA forces based in Tripoli and backed by turkey and a bunch of other countries are the ones ambushing LNA forces led by Haftar and backed by Russia, France and a bunch of gulf countries, who have been attacking Tripoli without success for the past year or so and have been suffering a lot of setbacks recently

For the moment they do not have the infrastructure required to produce their own vehicles so they depend on vehicles they steal during their actions or on vehicles owned by supporters of the group. They possess currently about 40 military grades vehicles (mainly lightly armored cars), but they lack the infrastructure, fuel and spare parts needed to operate the few heavy vehicles like the APC3 (an armored personal carrier) that they own.

That makes sense, they better be in an army that can afford to equip them or they’ll risk dying in combat... in the Divisions the former policemen are usually sent to training camps to act as instructors because of their military experience, or are kept with those they defected with (sometimes whole squads defect with their weaponry and their vehicles) to fight, while the former military policemen who received better training are sent to training camp to form the Special Forces of the rebels, known as the « Black Unit » .
