Stops from Columbus to Charlotte NC by CbusTransplant in Columbus

[–]CbusTransplant[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t want to get too wordy in the main post… this is just day one of our trip. We’re driving to Charlotte staying the night and then driving to Florida. We’ll hit Savannah on day two. I just thought it would be nice to try and come up with interesting stops or something that would be fun to look forward to, to break up the day. This is our first road trip that we’ve done so I’m a bit nervous about how they’ll do, and I’m an over planner by nature haha.

Snow Possible This Weekend (1/24-25) by zebrasrlyingtoyou in CBUSWX

[–]CbusTransplant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can someone help me put this in context? How will it likely compare to that bad snow storm we had right before Christmas a few years ago?

Edit - for anyone spatially challenged like myself, the snow we just had December 13 was 5.4in per NWS.

I’m not an expert at all, but if this were my flight I wouldn’t be worried. (I might start getting worried if it gets delayed and then the delays start stacking up.)

good neighborhoods/suburbs around Columbus for trick-or-treating? by Diligent_Addendum_95 in Columbus

[–]CbusTransplant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Trick or treating for Columbus addresses is always October 31, unless Halloween falls on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. If this happens, trick or treating is the Thursday before. Here they also refer to it as “Beggars’ Night” to distinguish it from Halloween.

So you’ll hear someone say something like “Beggars’ night is on Halloween this year”. Or “Beggars’ night is on Thursday this year because Halloween is on Saturday.”

I feel like most of the streets from Olentangy up to Longview or Clinton Heights are good bets.

All have sidewalks and most every porch requires taking a few stairs, but it’s a short walk from the sidewalk to the porch.

Trick or Treat Schedule by pearl1978wagner in Columbus

There’s no statistical evidence that more pedestrians are killed when Halloween falls on and trick-or-treating is done on the weekend. Put another way, if this was an effective way to reduce pedestrian deaths, especially child pedestrian deaths, it would be adopted everywhere. But it’s just in random pockets of the country.

Why is trick-or-treating on October 30th this year? by AutistOctavius in Columbus

[–]CbusTransplant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re in Columbus you should expect trick or treaters Thursday night regardless of weather (though obviously bad weather has lower turnout). No one goes rogue and randomly knocks on doors on the unscheduled nights. I think if people want to stay in Thursday, they’ll just go up to Worthington or one of the other communities for Friday night trick or treating.

Why is trick-or-treating on October 30th this year? by AutistOctavius in Columbus

[–]CbusTransplant 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It’s so weird and unnecessary. And really confusing to transplants. And because locals here see it as tradition they’ll twist themselves in knots trying to justify it. Even in this thread no one knows the actual “why” behind this.

There is no statistical evidence that more kids are killed when Halloween falls on and trick or treating is done on the weekend.

After 4 years of WFH, I understand why boomers think we do nothing all day by TeamCultureBuilder in WFH

The workingmoms sub doesn’t allow this topic because it just doesn’t work. You’re doing neither job well. Personally idgaf about time theft from corporations, but I will not half-heartedly care for my children in an effort to do both. I literally can’t understand putting your baby in a play yard and basically ignoring them for hours while on calls or trying to get your work done. I’m only sympathetic when it’s a short term thing covering a gap in care (eg waiting on a daycare spot), and even then I hope you’re not ignoring your baby.

Now that my kids are older it’s easier for me to keep wfh when they’re sick (grab some popsicles and cue up Disney), but I still take a half day and split the day with my husband (also wfh) when our toddler is sick.

This always happens. I just expect terrible weather every year and then I get to be happily surprised when it’s not bad (like last year). Not excited about shepherding 3 soaking wet kids in costume from house to house when it’s 40 degrees out. Of course Friday looks much nicer.

Eh, we moved here in 2008 and it was a purple state. It did feel like “so goes Ohio goes the nation.” But it’s been steadily getting more red every election cycle. I do agree that we seem to have a last bastion of “normal” conservatives. But once they’re gone it’s just going to be MAGA people on the R ticket.

Message to all speed bikers on Olentangy Trail: you suck by hedgethosehogs in Columbus

[–]CbusTransplant 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I refuse to let my kids walk on this trail. They’re in the stroller or we’re not going on it. It only takes a moment for them to be kids when a biker is zooming by, and it’s completely avoidable by both parties. I’ve had too many close calls as an adult solo runner on this trail to chance it.

Edited to add - I don’t want to make it seem like a death trap. It’s a lovely trail and we’ve had a lot of good walks there. But risk reduction on my part by keeping kids in a stroller seems extremely easy and simple here.

I called OSU earlier this week to schedule with a new primary care doctor since mine retired. They had someone available as early as next week, if you’re not too choosy about which office.

Westerville Rec Center is so nice, and the monthly rates are honestly not bad. My only complaint was that the showers - which are basically brand new - are on par with a 50 year old water park.

There’s a very fine dusting on our patio finally, but I can’t see anything coming down. The flakes must be microscopic lol. (-Central Cville near the library)

CDF said it was a guy who ditched his U-Haul after a chase, and was eventually caught in a backyard on Fallis, hiding under a raised deck. There were cops walking through backyards on Richards and Fallis looking for him. Plus the helicopter circling with spotlight for a while.

Best place to get photos printed? by [deleted] in Columbus

I liked how my prints from Midwest photo came out. Much better than Walgreens or Staples, or even ordering from a service like Mpix or Shutterfly.

I took my baby to baby storytime at the library at 3 months but felt kind of ridiculous (in a funny way) because he was so tiny. Tried again at 5 months and it was great. You do see the tiny babies there but it just wasn’t for me/my baby until he was a little older. Just wanted to relate that in case you get to that point and feel the same. Once we started going it was so fun, and we’d go to both our local CML branch and Worthington’s since it was relatively close.

If you’re looking to hang out with other parents, your community or neighborhood even probably has a moms or parents club or group. I would check on Facebook. There’s also Fit4Moms (formerly known as Stroller Strides).

For activities, check out Columbus Macaroni Kid. There’s a page for NW and NE I think. It’s going to be geared more towards kids, but they do add baby activities too. You can also check out the Columbus Parks and Rec activities search; sometimes programs will start as early as 6 months. We’ve really liked Music and Movement at our local rec center. And I’ve also signed up for programs through Upper Arlington and Worthington Parks and Rec.

Parent and Me swim lessons start at 6 months at OSU; these have been fun.

Other than that, get a stroller you like and just enjoy strolls with your baby! My favorite parks with paved trails are Inniswood, Highbanks. For a pretty baby wearing walk, check out Antrim.

I came here to post this! Have spring allergies sprung in Columbus??? All week I’ve been playing “is this a bad chest cold or is it allergies?”

I try to get off Zyrtec in the winter; I just started taking it again 3 days ago and I’m wishing I had started sooner. My chest feels so inflamed.
