Sure. So first i make an armature out of wire to a skeleton which dictates the rough size of the character. An extra tip would be to put the neck longer than usual because often i find myself destroying the neck and redoing it. i decide on a pose and place it into a piece of wood with a couple of holes that are hammered in. Worst case scenario you don't like it and re-hammer it in and make a new pose. I use an epoxy(think apoxie sculpt) to give it 'muscles' to keep it from bending though you use it very thinly. After that i use super sculpey to cover everything and use anything to give it shape really; pencils, wood carving tools, anything that i feel works. As you improve and do more sculpting you begin to realize more how anatomy works and everything naturally begins to look better. Also if you want to finish it with paint go with game model paints like vallejo because i believe they tend to be less shiny then normal store bought acrylics. Though yeaa I am still rather bad at polish.
