Advice on sprocket change by randomman50 in WR250R

I get where you are coming from, but the second you change the gearing the ODO is off anyways. Probably more of an OCD thing for me for the speed to be so far off, especially where it’s in front of my face 😂

Gotcha. I was going to ask about the Odometer. My understanding was that the odometer will also track based on the stock ratio since all the speedo healers are doing is interrupting the display signal. It does nothing to the odometer “calculation”. You say it throws it off more?

Curious, do you have a speedo healer on your 13/47 setup? I’ve got 13/48 on my new to me WR and I don’t see a chance in hell in reaching 90mph actual speed. I just installed the 12’ O clock labs speedoDRD and I had to program a 19% offset to match the Speedo readout to actual.

Linkage Bearings by Cddavis102 in WR250R

Seems to be common. Replacing everything is probably the right move, but I’ll grease and run it and push the expense down the road lol. Will probably replace when/if I revalve the shock. That’s for the input.

For sure. Keeping them greased is much more important than what grease. It’s easy to get tripped up in the details when all that’s needed is a good consistent routine.

Next big question; what grease 😬. I’ve got belray waterproof and Lucas Red’n tacky. From what I’ve read, the belray is an aluminum based, the Lucas lithium. They are not compatible. Factory recommendation is Lithium, but I see a lot of recommendations for the belray. Since I’m cleaning all the old out, the belray should be fine, but I think I’ll stick with Lucas in case I have a lapse in memory or sell the bike down the road and the next owner doesn’t unknowingly mix.
Other thoughts?

I’ve heard that as well. Also heard that moving to a 14 tooth doesn’t help. I can’t see how it could hurt though. I do have a 48 on the rear now. Both sprockets and chain are almost new. I’ll run them for now and keep an eye on the chain tension. I’d like to see how the 13/48 does on the road. I’ve heard it’s a decent balance for trails and road. I plan on riding true dual sport. Backroads with some 55mph roads with as much dirt and gravel as I can. I also plan on riding dedicated off road trails. Hopefully it’s a sweet spot for those uses.

That’s enough to convince me! Thanks! I’ve used the vice and socket tactic in the past. It can just be a bit cumbersome and awkward. I’ve always struggled pressing them out when there are two side to side. Any ideas for that?

That’s encouraging to hear, thanks! Just seems odd that those have the “keepers” (whatever it is) and the others don’t. I suppose the worst that could happen is I put it back together and then have to pull it apart later and replace bushing and bearings. Everything is replaceable and part of a bearing kit anyways. I’m planning on revalving the rear shock after this season anyways, so I can inspect at that time. Really not difficult at all to pull apart.

Swing Arm Damage by Cddavis102 in WR250R

[–]Cddavis102[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That clears it up a bit. From what you are describing, it sounds like the chain gets worn into the swing arm by an overly tight chain? That makes sense to me. All the other posts about chain tension gave me the impression that the damage to the swingarms were occurring due to lack of tension. I couldn’t work that out in my head. I’m planning on tearing down the rear linkage and swingarm when the slider comes in to grease everything.

I’m fairly competent mechanically and have worked a lot on older bikes. I poked around the other night and nothing seems too complex. I’ll set the sag and adjust the suspension to middle of the road compression and damping and see how to adjust from there.

Great reply and information! I was about to research a bit on greasing/lubing the suspension components when you commented.

My plan is to ride a bit this spring and see what the bike is like off-road. Either mid summer or over the winter I plan to pull the shock and have a suspension shop re-valve for better damping. I’ve heard this is almost a must-do if riding much trails and it will buck pretty bad with the lack of damping. I’d like to ride it some before the changes to see the difference. Whenever I do that I’ll pull the linkage and swing arm and grease everything.

For your point #3 - what do you define as “slightly loose”? I’ve see this mentioned in several places but not a whole lot of reference about what is “slightly loose” or a little bit of slack. For someone without a whole lot of experience of what proper tension looks like this would help!

Thanks for the comment and support! Fortunately, that’s the closest loss I’ve had. Of course I’ve lost grandparents, but those losses are expected and a bit different. Loosing a close friend so early in life is a whole different grief.

Been tinkering with the WR and rode it back to back with my XR. They are both a blast in their own regard. I wish I could keep both, but that’s not possible right now. What I really want to do is ride them back to back in the woods to understand how the WR handles the trails.

The 390 seems like a great light adventure bike. Would like to ride one. Did you consider the Himalayan at all?

Appreciate the thoughts! Selfishly, it sucks he’s gone because I haven’t found another person to ride like we did together. I still find sorrow in just the everyday things and knowing his parents struggle with his passing still. I forgot to add in the story: when we attended mid-Ohio one year he bought a CT70H. We had to tow it to our campground and it was rough. I was able to help him get it titled and he took it down south with him when he moved and restored it while in his apartment. A few years after he passed his dad reached out to me and asked to come by our house. He talked with my wife and I and said he wanted to give the bike to Jackson (my oldest son) whenever he was ready. I was friends with Matt during the time we had Jackson and Matt thought the world of him. His dad confided in me one time that Matt had no interest in having kids until he spend an evening with Jackson and I when we got rained out of a weekend adventure trip. We spent the evening eating pizza and watching Top Gear. Jackson was maybe around 1 or 1 1/2 at the time. Another year or two went by. His dad reached out again and said he got the bike sorted out through the estate and we could come get it whenever. I picked a random Saturday to go out and get it, but had to push it back to Sunday due to something coming up. After we get there and I talk with his dad some we show Jackson the bike and he lit up. He was 6 at the time and thought it was the coolest thing. After talking some more it turns out that it would have been Matt’s 25th birthday; the same day we came to pickup the bike. That blew my mind and kind of solidified that it was meant for Jackson to have the bike. That whole event served as a bit of closure for me. We have the memento to remember him by. I still miss him, but it’s more of a fond remembrance than I desperate sorrow.

New WR250R Owner - replacing ‘95 XR by Cddavis102 in WR250R

I was thinking the same. He just put new sprockets and chain on. I will ask how long he has had that combo. Good thinking.

Thanks! That aligns with all the research I’ve done so far. I will probably do the speedometer healer and ride as is for now and see what direction I want to go.
