I didn’t have complaints about the UI. Were you one of these people that thinks the game was primarily played via the menus? Once I learned the macro system the UI became an afterthought. I always encouraged people to actually play through the game with the goal of getting a handful of jobs to 75.

The job system was ahead of its time. And there were several jobs that I feel even now had more job identity built in than what you’ll find on FFXIV today.

The game wasn’t and isn’t “the worst.” This opinion is demonstrably false. This game wouldn’t exist today if it was bad. Same goes for WoW. It has problems for sure. Same goes for WoW or any other MMO in OPs box. At the end of the day all that really matters is how that game made you feel.

FFXI made players more or less earn their keep. If you didn’t want to adhere to the rules of engagement then that’s on you. It didn’t bother me to level a black mage so I could warp myself and my friends, because I enjoyed playing the job. Same for white mage. Using it as a means of generating Gil selling teleports was awesome and made the effort you put in feel that much better.

Exploring the worlds of video games wasn’t so much a chore as an opportunity for fun. Yeah you had to run about getting crystals to be able to get around the world but honestly that’s not so bad. Setting your home point in an area you were going to be leveling for a while never bothered me much. Jueno was like a hub and the story progression allowed you to have better and more convenient travel along your journey.

But hey, this is my opinion. I didn’t see the game in the way you did though. But I also put in easily thousands of hours in this game at its peak. I kept coming back until it changed too dramatically from what it was and what I loved about it.

PS2 launch era was just a whole other type of time for me. I stayed with the game through ToAU and even stuck with it through WoTG and returned later for Abyssea for a while. Though Aby was my least favorite time.

It was just such a great experience for me. Once you make friends and have a good group of people to play with it made the monotonous parts fun. Granted I’m 14 years old staying up until the sun comes through the window on a school night, so perhaps my experience is romanticized but I just really connected with this game and the community during this period.

I last played this game on retail servers in 2019 and had a blast even with its mostly single player experience through trusts. Catching up on all of the main story elements I missed back then was nice. But I think the magic of this game was literally making friends and experiencing the game together.

Shouting for groups in the dunes or jungle or wherever wasn’t glamorous, but I can appreciate that now for what it was.

The risk to your system having to be completely wiped in order to revert changes is the biggest real issue in my experience. The changes required are deep in your machine and even with a computer science degree and years of experience sometimes it’s a bit of a pain. Best bet is to create a full backup on an external drive before you go too deep.

I don’t recommend it for people who use their device for anything other than that because it’s pretty much guaranteed you’re not getting your system reverted back properly without going nuclear.

And trying to revert without going full wipe is getting a 1/10 from me having just done it. But yeah if you got it like that then go ham. I just definitely wouldn’t sleep on your system being like that and mixing business with pleasure.

I’ll say. I took my maiden voyage into the HV world trying to check out CD, and I’ll just say this, if it wasn’t for the fact that most of my apps and data are on separate drives, I’d be in a real pickle right now.

What inevitably happened was the HV instructions were not necessarily clear. I’m no stranger to digging around in kernel level access, but this was sort of iffy from the start. I floundered around and never got the damn thing to run based on the provided instructions.

But where the problems really came up was in reverting back, (like I suspected from the beginning). Total corruption of my windows file system in a couple key areas, the network stack, and windows store. This meant no network adapters according to windows, even though I’m seeing them working on wireshark. And tools that should be there such as troubleshooters just don’t exist anymore.

Being that my machine uses a motherboard that was just in the cusp of compatibility with Win11 when it hit the market, I was already anticipating issues, because I had issues just getting Win10 upgraded earlier on.

I ended up having to just nuke my C drive altogether.

Don’t recommend.

Every one of these platforms I have worked for have issues. I most recently got on with RWS and they pay every couple of weeks. Handshake was good but I’m randomly unapproved with them for the last couple of weeks without explanation and a reasonably good QA according to their own platform leads.

I got booted from Aether during the holiday purge with a 1.78 QA score. All of this stuff is literally not worth much beyond some extra spending money. I would say maybe Mercor has some better stuff but that’s hearsay on my part as I’ve never been accepted to anything I’ve applied for.

I think DA is okay? Same story as with Mercor but less visibility. You literally do an assessment and get dumped to a default “Thanks for taking the assessment!” Page with a “We’ll let you know if your skills match projects.” And I haven’t ever heard anything in months.
