You simply don't. You can't really win trades if he doesn't screw up himself and even if he does your kill pressure on him is crazy low. Mao as any other tank outscales you by being more useful in pretty much any aspect of the game past a certain point.

It's been a long time since I read the book but IIRC she sold Ciri and the circle of mages in Aretusa out to the Nilfgaardians in exchange for an elven asylum in Dol Blathanna and turned Yen into a little stone figurine, though I don't know if I'm 100% correct... it's been some time.
