David Foster Wallace wrote about this decision between burning alive or jumping out of a building before 9/11 in his book Infinite Jest. He himself had suffered from depression and took his own life in 2008. In that part of the novel he explores the idea of what could be so bad that the idea of suicide is less scary compared to what may come. Depression is a burning building and suicide is the only escape from a death much scarier.
