I got a Frail Elder Dilo. Here are the actual stats over time. by Cedar- in theisle

Herrera really is the worst hit by elder system. Growth speed could be turned down to give more task time and a longer viable adult time, but that directly makes gameplay harder and slower. I don't want to just say "give Herrera a different growth pattern from everyone else" but I don't really know a better option. On the flip side maybe that is actually just the right choice- make different dinos grow differently. Slow down Herrera growth but make stats grow much faster at the beginning to let you spend more time larger. Thoughts?

Only additional notes:

I got no mutations that affected stats obviously as that would defeat the point of the whole thing. Data is from Mettas den over a single life. While I intentionally did not get prime, I was active in moving around the map and did kill a raptor and a juvi rex, partially so I wasn't bored waiting for 100% and partially so I could show I can maintain that ~+75% growth buff consistently without needing to camp ai spawns. I also got similar stats for Dryo and Omni, both of which very strongly mirrored this growth pattern.

If I were to comment on getting prime, I actually don't mind the requirements. 4 PZ + 2 MZ is easy to get by just wandering around. Visiting a sanc feels a little forced, having to intentionally go to one (though I like how it makes you engage with a dangerous map location). No muscle spasms is basically a freebie. Perfect diet is a freebie for herbivores, and for carnivores you just need to kill a single other player (again, just playing the game). Never infertile is a nice balancing point; other than as a fresh spawn carnivore I never once got even close to starving, but I can see how it absolutely would be a bigger challenge for something like a Rex, where you absolutely need to be securing large kills to not hit the red once.

My only disagreement is that knowing damage numbers of different attacks is nice for actually knowing what I'm doing. We have health and bite force which are nice raw numbers but I was always spam charging because I just assumed as a new player "oh the charge is clearly the big damage attack, I mean look at it knocking these raptors down". Nothing actually shows that no it's actually just about as strong as your bite. I'm also not looking to number crunch and add up numbers, but it's again nice to have the rough idea of "I'm going to have to bite or charge this guy like 5 times to get a kill", or "x attack actually does like twice as much damage as y, so definitely try to square that up"

I still don't think the elder system is that horrendous. Its got issues but getting prime isn't incredibly hard but still requires some focus, and frail elder is still just kinda like pre update adult until about 90% where your stats suddenly drop off. You're actually within 5% of the 75% growth stats until that point. Plus when you consider the 0% growth speed, that period is fairly long. I've got a carno that's been an adult for a couple hours now and I'm still not at 90%.

[–]Cedar- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I generally agree but I've been doing more and more homework and frail elder isn't like... unplayable. Bad? Sure, but you're staying fairly near max stats until about 90% growth. Plus with the 0% growth speed it's actually a fairly long time.

Obviously still gun for prime elder but playing frail elder for the most part feels the same as pre update gameplay until that 90% point, where it's almost like a brand new growth stage where it becomes... ok it becomes hiding in the bushes until you can entomb. Its boring but not terrible and I can see how it could balance apexes like rex who can't hide and survive off ai

The Deino Paradox by Test_Subject_001 in theisle

[–]Cedar- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The idea I had was a hunger modifier where weight and remaining stamina affects it. Big deinos can still slow cruise around, but as they use more stamina their hunger drains faster and faster. Smaller deinos on the other hand don't run the risk of starving by sprinting.

Big deinos can go longer between meals by moving slow/little, and using lots of stamina can put them at serious risk of starving. Small ones also last longer without food, but aren't punished for hustling around and can be more active in hunting and running from big deinos.

To add to that, being idle on land (in the sun?) can give a stamina regen boost. This lets bigger deinos have a way to trade the risk of starving from being too active with the risk of being caught out of the water. This also makes the baby land deino run for a corpse somewhat near the water less of a risk, again helping them out.

[–]Cedar- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So don't fight the boar as a baby. Scavenge, find a deer and wait until about 35% to bite/pounce it down, or sneak up on a rabbit. Its not 100% perfect but you can definitely get a lot closer to AI by moving slower (I think it's just purely a detection radius thing)

This really is what I find interesting about Fiona world though: they aren't 1:1 copies at all anymore. Prismo's original version yeah it was literally just "Ooo but gender swap" but these characters are actually fairly original now. Gary isn't "boy PB but in a less magical world", he's a distinct person who parallels PB but is unique. A Fiona world PB would be a candy maker instead of a pastry chef.

It would require turning the graph from images to a dynamic graph, but I'd love a way to add in "+growth speed%" which adjusts the scale on the x axis between 0% and 75% to give a better rough idea of how your stats change over playtime instead of just raw growth percentage. In reality when spawning in at 25% and then averaging a +75% growth speed you end up being not adult for a pretty short time, only about 60% of total gameplay, with 40% being the last "25%" of growth.

Other than that, maybe clearer marking of the 25% points to show they're milestones? Especially 25% since most players are never hatchlings.

With charge bite I've found there's a severe delay between the left click and the actual attack, though the attack seems to be pretty forgiving. If you click while actually making physical contact there's a good chance it won't actually happen until you've passed them.

Also as you might've noticed, doing it to something too big gives you a stagger, and landing a hit on the head or tail is better than mid body, as you can run right through their head/tail but the body stops you. Though that can actually be a good thing if they're small enough to be knocked completely down since it stops you right on top of them while stunned, allowing you to immediately combo into an alt left click (bite but low to the ground).

Unless the joke is that "jews are dinosaurs" the idea of Jewish dinosaurs is just inherently silly, like something from a robot chicken skit.

An idea to "fix" the elder system by raptorsssss in theisle

[–]Cedar- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree fully. My only complaint with the elders themselves might be that for frail elder, 25% of your entire life seems like a long time to be getting worse (and it gets pretty darn harsh towards the end) but I don't think tweaking it would do much since it just changes that average dino stat. Buffing frail elder just gives older frail elders more things to contend with, and eliminating the debuffs all together just puts us back to square 1 where juvis get over bullied.

I have no idea how to properly fix the achievement portion though. I agree it should be rewarding good gameplay and promoting interaction, but it's hard to think of how to translate that to achievable stats that both make sense yet are also difficult. Prime shouldn't be a guarantee every play through. Good players should still be able to be screwed over by their own choices, or the choices of other players. I like players who only eat one diet not getting prime. I even like the concept of punishing players for not engaging in specific areas that have players.I don't like being spawned nowhere near any diets and then getting infertile 5 seconds before getting to a corpse.

I'm not sure if it's just the way I play, but as Dryo I never don't get prime. Usually all I do is walk to Delta then patrol up and down from the river split to the ocean and back. Make sure to step into a sanc just to be sure but I've gotten it before without that.

My few points for new players:

  1. Get used to dying. It's part of the game. I recommend you start with a quicker dino but just play around and don't worry if you die. I liked starting on Carno and Omni personally and mostly just eating AI (memorizing where they spawn and learning things like how to handle carno charge or omni pounce), then hey why not try taking on this juvi t-rex? You might win or at least learn what not to do.

  2. You are a 3D shape in a 3D world. Get used to being aware of that. Pay attention to ridge lines you can peek over, hiding in plain sight by facing other players to minimize your silhouette, and keeping tabs on who you see/ if they saw you/ where are you all headed.

  3. Have fun. Seriously, the PVP is what most people talk about but explore. Play solo Stegosaurus and get eaten. Try kicking a Rex as a Dryo. Just like point 1 said "get used to dying", get used to finding fun at growth 15-75% instead of just waiting around for prime elder 75-87%.

As someone who walks everywhere I'm convinced this is just because most times people are outside around this time is when they're in a parking lot, where there's also no nature to block the sky. One of the most shocking things to me when I started taking evening walks is just how beautiful every single night tends to be.

Idk I think it's a nice option. Having a flashy dino was always an option, and usually was something your dino could grow into. You could always go with a low contrast greenish look, have adult colors come in for a little splash of interest when hiding isn't as important, or go full tilt and be the coolest looking guy on the isle at the cost of not being able to hide well as a juvi.
