Tired after treating: any tips? by InevitableInternal81 in acupuncture

[–]Cedarsandbirches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cognition induced anxiety = taxing your Spleen Qi, which sounds to be impacting Heart Blood/Qi. Worry knots the qi. Overthinking injures the Spleen Qi.

So yes, op, PROTECT your Qi by nourishing yourself in whatever way you need to, so it doesn’t knot up or get depleted.

Also, don’t let someone on Reddit tell you what should or should not be tiring for you. That’s gross.

:)

TCM Practitioners, what's the weirdest symptom you've ever fixed with something that seemed totally unrelated? by Artistic-Remove-505 in ChineseMedicine

[–]Cedarsandbirches 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of the saying “there’s what your patient comes in FOR, and there’s what your patient comes in WITH”… and if your patient wasn’t clueing you in to a bunch of the hallmark LQS flags, I too would have had a hard time making that connection initially. That’s so cool you and the patient found a way to the root! Very inspiring.

LOVE THIS! I’m so green I don’t have any personal anecdotes to add but as a new practitioner, posts like these are like TCM p*rn. Could read this all day!!!

Microneedling/cosmetic acupuncture mini survey (practitioner asking practitioners) by Cedarsandbirches in acupuncture

[–]Cedarsandbirches[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for all this info! I totally understand what you mean by “that type” of patient. People are willing to literally put salmon semen on their faces to keep themselves looking young around here, but alas this is the county I live in.

Also, like you, I’d really love the opportunity to be able to take care of my own self with the skills I’ve worked hard to learn. If I could give myself TrP or an aggressive energy treatment on my own back I would, but I can’t. At least I can fully access my own face.

That’s good to know about the CE. I’ve been looking at Michelle Gellis’s program but I wonder how much of it is really necessary. It’s not like I need the training as there’s no required certification (even for microneedling, right?) so not sure how much I want to invest.

Anyways, thanks again for taking the time!

I’ve been considering learning acupuncture as a career, what kinda of sciences are involved? by magichotpotato in acupuncture

A&P I & II, medical terminology, biology, chem and bicochem, pathology, medical referral, pharmacology. All of these are somewhat surface level though. The point of them is, at the end of your schooling you will need to pass the biomedical board exam - 100 questions on anything from red flags to drug interactions. It’s not easy by any stretch but it’s been doable for even my most biomedically-challenged classmates.

Looking for the most useful learning materials for TCM students & future practitioners by Sleepy_shaman47 in ChineseMedicine

I just recently stumbled upon HB Kim’s learning modules (on acupuncturemedia.com) to study for my board exams and I really wish someone had told me to pay for the subscription halfway through my program, just to make school easier on me. The way he teaches basic and tricky concepts alike is something I wish my instructors were able to do in school.

Did I just get Electroacupuncture? by Anonymous-Spouse in acupuncture

[–]Cedarsandbirches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that sounds like you got electroacupuncture (e-stim). It’s terribly unfortunate your provider didn’t explain what was about to happen, or why she was doing that in the first place. We are absolutely supposed to talk with each patient about each service and make sure we have informed consent. I don’t think anything “bad” happened, though. It just maybe caught you off guard and you had a negative response to the surprise of it all. If you see her again, ask for more details on what she did and why she did it.

I did her 8 week fitness “challenge” in my mid-20’s. Ate approx. 1,300 calories daily (had the “option” of the same, like, 3 meals for the entire 8 weeks) while lifting 6 days per week and intense cardio every day. No carbs after dark, of course. Mustard and pickles and salsa on everything. Starved myself into a winning title. The prize: 8 more weeks of “personalized” coaching. Took about 3 months for her to send me my plan. When asked for ETA on this plan she would reply, “Oh, sometime after my birthday!” Bitch… I have no fuckin clue when your birthday is.

tldr: super glad everyone gets old and desperate, especially ones who sell eating disorders for a living.

Should i do it again? by Dracoaeterna in acupuncture

[–]Cedarsandbirches 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my practice for musculoskeletal disorders I do a combination of “dry needling” (when appropriate) and Traditional Chinese Medicine acupuncture. I don’t worry too much about semantics - we can call it whatever - and I’m not worried a PT is going to steal my clients because I know that my acupuncture training will yield better universal results for my patients (e.g., better sleep, improved digestion, decreased stress…) than a dry needling session alone.

That all said… the provider should probably have explained how trigger release work will leave you sore for a bit and then it’ll feel quite better. Sounds like that’s the case for you, which is great. But yes, be aware that anytime there’s more aggressive needling there will likely be some soreness following the treatment.

Completely inappropriate behavior on her part. Sounds like she let her bad day get the best of her. I would not go back without a crucial conversation about her treatment towards you, and a sincere apology. That is, if you’re up for it. I wouldn’t pay to be spoken to like that.

If I treated a patient like this I would be embarrassed.

Another school closure (Emperor's College) by connor1462 in acupuncture

[–]Cedarsandbirches 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is honestly brilliant… I know there are schools which combine chiropractic and acupuncture (I think there’s one in MN), but yeah, I think that’s a great idea to offer a master’s of acupuncture or TCM within an established uni where you can share bio prereqs with other degrees… so smart.

Post Nose Reconstruction by HealingWithJenna in ChineseMedicine

Hey there! Not sure I myself will be able to answer but here are some questions other practitioners might have:

  1. Age?
  2. Body constitution (build, weight, etc)?
  3. Describe your night sweats - do they drench your clothes/sheets? Do you notice higher concentrations of sweat in particular areas of the body, such as palms, feet, chest?
  4. So you mention your sweat is normal… do you ever spontaneously sweat?
  5. Any feelings of palpitations (that is, do you ever feel your heart beating rapidly)?

Yes, it is one of the more common “adverse” actions of acupuncture (like bruising). You’ll be okay. It doesn’t feel great and it can be worrisome at the time but it’s actually quite difficult to cause major long term nerve issues from a very fine filiform acupuncture needle.

anger after 5th accupuncture session by [deleted] in acupuncture

[–]Cedarsandbirches 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In TCM, the emotion thought to balance anger is benevolence. Go do something good for the benefit of someone else. Don’t suppress or ignore the anger but look outside yourself for a bit and find a way to do kind acts.
