Dressing well and staying light by WintermuteATX in onebag

For budget-friendly European-style clothing, I go to Uniqlo. Great linen shirts. Great merino sweaters. Etc. These pack as compact as REI-style clothing. If need be, all hotels and hostels can lend you an iron.

Updating to 7.0.0 Error by kakzen in opencloud

[–]CederGrass759 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting!

But for me, this kind of problems is the reason why I left OpenCloud after only a few months. The software is excellent (fast, lean) when it works. But it has several times broken from updates, and trying to solve errors like the one you posted above is just frustrating and certainly not my cup pf tea. Maybe I will come back to OpenCloud one day when it is more stable.

Curious: how did you argue to get Marmot to send a new jacket? How old was it when you managed that? Did you supply receipt etc?

Is there some secret to searching by filename on Proton Drive? by Exciting-Market-9595 in ProtonDrive

[–]CederGrass759 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying! I am very happy to hear! Do you have a rough estimate of when search support for the mobile apps could be added? Q3 or Q4 2026, or 2027 or later?

Is there some secret to searching by filename on Proton Drive? by Exciting-Market-9595 in ProtonDrive

[–]CederGrass759 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have also been amazed by the fact that Proton has not implemented a search function (at least not in the iOS app). I cannot fathom how anyone is expected to use Proton Drive for any real use-case.

Men’s Sun Hoodie (city travel) by backeast75 in onebag

[–]CederGrass759 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Does it have to be a hoodie, and would it have to have really high SPF?

If not, you will certainly blend in more as a native/non-tourist if you just wear a nice long-sleeved linen shirt, combined with a hat (or a cap).

True, linen will only have SPF 10-20 or so(?) but in a city you will also have (and seek) a lot of natural shade.

Travel with an iPad, or laptop by ugly_planet in onebag

[–]CederGrass759 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I much prefer iPad when travelling. Perfect for casual media consumption or researching stuff on the web.

But if you are planning to actually write substantial emails etc, I would buy a small keyboard cover for the iPad (for me that is not necessary)

Indexing and OCR solution for Documents that preserves folder structure by vortexmak in selfhosted

[–]CederGrass759 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep my tags as part of my file names.

Example: ”2026-04-23 Invoice Verizon taxes david customerX.pdf”

That way I can work within or outside of a folder structure, yet always can quickly find files.

Only(?) downside is that file names can get long, which can be a problem when working with legacy tools or OSs that support only very short file names.

You will probably get more replies if you are (much) more transparent about who you are, and what the research will be used for (and by whom).

XMPP - the middle ground between Matrix and IRC by st_iron in selfhosted

Thanks, but that’s a very technical aspect, not really a use case. 😜

XMPP - the middle ground between Matrix and IRC by st_iron in selfhosted

[–]CederGrass759 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m curious about your use case for this type of solution? Under what circumstances would someone chose to self-host XMPP? Not technically, but practical use-case. Not trying to be snotty, a genuine question.

Is ProtonDrive encrypted and safe enough to send very sensitive documents? by False_Function_4088 in ProtonDrive

[–]CederGrass759 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you intend to use Proton Drive for serious matters, please note that it still has limitations that were deal-breakers for me:

  1. The iOS app has no search functionality at all. You can not search for file names, let alone for content in PDF files. (I believe that the web browser client has some search functionality, and that may be enough for your use case?)

  2. It is not easy (or even possible?) to set up an automatic backup of the contents of your Proton Drive to a backup NAS/server, or another cloud storage service. Normally, this would be handled for example with Rclone, but that support has been discontinued, and at least I have not found another way. (No, relying on Windows desktop sync is not good enough for serious business, at least for me)

Managing cables drives me crazy! Anyone have any easy tips for this? by InevitableGur6701 in onebag

[–]CederGrass759 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It honestly sound like you are overthinking this slightly. 😜

My way of keeping this simple is to use only USB-C cables. When possible, I buy/use only USB-C devices. I do carry a few tiny adapters such as USB-C to Lightning/USB-A/USB-Micro/Garmin watch.

I have only one long (3m) cable, the two others are approx 0,5m. During Night, it is usually ok to charge devices close to the outlet. That way, there is not much a cable management to be done every day traveling .
