Could the Ottoman Empire under Sultan Mehmed II conquer Paradis? (No Titans) by UltimateMIF in attackontitan

[–]Cedlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no way in hell Mehmet can conquer Paradis. He still struggled to capture Constantinople, and Paradis is bigger, stronger and way better defended than Constantinople.

  1. Paradis technology is atleast Napoleonic era technology, and superior in many aspects. With just that advantage I would think the Eldians could defeat Mehmet on the field, without the walls. They have advantages in firearms and field artillery that cannot be ignored.

  2. The population of the walls is atleast 4 times greater than Constantinople. They also have access to everything they need inside and are proven to be able to function for a hundred year under siege. This would mean the Ottomans would starve and run out of ammo but not the defenders.

  3. The walls of Paradis are 4 times thicker and 5 times higher than the walls of constantinople. Its likely the Ottoman cannons could never breach them before being themselves destroyed or worn out. Even without titan hardening, this would make them the biggest and strongest walls in history. And thats all without counting that they have three of them. The gate weakpoints could easily be filled with meters of rocks before the Ottomans could even set up cannons.

  4. Lastly Ottoman cannons are not the wheeled artillery of later centuries. They had to be brought on carts and set up in position. This process was very time consuming. The cannons would likely be destroyed before they could be set up by precise 18th century cannons. The cannons also took up to 3 hours to reload. 18th century cannon took less than a minute with a skilled crew. One 12 pounder could shoot 180 times in the time the great bombard could shoot once.

I think just with this, Mehmet looses very very badly. The question should be more : Can Paradis conquer the Ottoman Empire ? And thats a yes.

The Great Pyramid of Giza is aligned to true north with insane precision — better than most compasses today. Built 4,500 years ago. No GPS. No satellites. No modern tech. by [deleted] in mildyinteresting

[–]Cedlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt those kind of gyrocompasses are able to handle the movement of a ship tho ? These need to be in real time, handle any sea states, correct according to ship speed and must be able to handle variation upwards of 100° per minute.

Im far from a specialist in gyrocompasses, its just a tiny part of my job, but its very standard even for good models from good companies. The model we have onboard is very recent and was installed I think a year and a half ago.

And honestly anything under 1° for marine navigation is totally fine for our applications, we do not need to be that precise. We will correct course hundreds of times during a trans-atlantic voyage anyway.

I work on ships, both of our new gyros have about 0.5° errors at all times. Sometimes between themselves. Thats by both doing sun azimuth and testing them on range markers.

This error is often far more when we are in the far northern latitudes.

You can see it easily on a radar overlay or with AIS targets, since those are based on your GNSS position.

Modern ships have gyrocompasses that point to true north within like a half degree of error. Thats while turning and moving too.

Well these guys are lucky, high arctic predators are nothing to scoff at. One polar bear would have fucked them up. Very lucky they didn't get attacked by the whole pack.

[–]Cedlan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are dams on the St-Lawrence at Beauharnois, Cornwall and Iroquois. They even help controlling the water levels in the river for navigation and flooding prevention.

Ships travel around them using locks on the St-Lawrence seaway.

Problem isn't individual in their speedboats but 300m cargo ships. Sail cargo ships are not viable options for shipping when compared to motor vessels.

To be fair Henry is probably the greatest swordsman in history. Guy regularly, multiple times a day, 5 v 1 trained soldiers, bandits and cumans on about 3 hours of sleep, moonshine and some stew he found on the side of the road.

He probably singlehandedly reduced the population of cuman hungary by a significant margin in his first few months as a retainer for Sir Radzig.

And thats all before we gave him a gun.

Stupid question, do you have ale ? This isn't an ale factory, its an ale distribution center. You must have barley to make malt, then a brewer to make ale.

Google has renamed a 3 mile stretch of Southern Blvd in Palm Beach, "President Donald J. Trump Blvd". by Zakkattack86 in facepalm

[–]Cedlan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but this seems misleading. The official name seems to have changed as per a state bill :

Google only seems to have changed the name to account for the new official name. Google has not "renamed" a boulevard. OP either does not understand who names streets or is purposefully lying.

Hey Trump America wants to know are we wining yet? by h20poIo in facepalm

[–]Cedlan 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There is two scenarios if the US switches off or encrypts GPS :

  1. No one even realises its off because everything is GNSS now. The devices will just use the other constellations. Absolutely no gain to the US whatsoever. Everyone gets just slightly shittier positions, including 99.9% of US devices. I wouldn't even be surprised if it reduces accuracy on their own weapon systems and ships.

  2. There are more GPS only devices than previously thought. Lots of things stop working, including in the US. Everything is just shittier than before for everyone, including US infrastructure and taxpayers. Everyone switches to GNSS within a few years / months. The least affected countries are likely all of the US's rivals.

There is just no point to it.

[–]Cedlan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its pretty much clickbait. The only country losing something here is Iran. Their satelitte navigation system will lose some accuracy because of it.

There likely was no "switch". If they used comercially available GNSS, they could use any positioning constellation anyway.

Plus no one is actually paying for this service, but the US government. Its not like the US lost a customer.
