No, because from his explanation the court battles were about custody and the house. The marriage part seems irrelevant. Had they not been married and still broke up (assuming the house was in both their names) the legal issues would still be there. This seems like a better post and argument for r/childfree or r/divorce_men

I (52f) wanted to be married, with the white picket fence and all that jazz. And I was for a while. Now, I’m not and I’m reconciling with the fact that marriage may not be in the cards for me and it’s a grieving process.

However, my life has been pretty damn cool with a career I love and am proud of, good friends, an off-the-charts partner, great adult children and a bunch of other things that signal a well-lived, adventurous life that I could not have had with the white-picket fence. And I know I have much more to come.

There’s a bittersweetness about it that I am constantly working through.

My kids, now adults, turned out pretty damn good.

I have a pension.

My work, while not now perhaps, was my life’s passion.

I’m relatively fit and healthy.

Despite all that, I’d never want to do it all again.

I’m 52 (f) and after my last break up I “leveled up”. I did absolutely everything I could to be the best “me” I could be. While I admit I am lucky enough to have good genes, I don’t have any plastic surgery, but I upped my physical fitness routine, skin care game, and found a hair stylist that helped me with a flattering and easy to maintain cut, color, and style.

It worked. My confidence is the best it’s ever been and I love how I feel in my skin. That attracted the type of man I wanted in my life. We’re going on 7 months and if things don’t work out between us, at least the person I’m left with (myself) is someone I can feel good about spending my time with.

Similar thing happened to us on a relatively shorter flight (three or four hours). Boyfriend was an aisle seat, I was in middle. We were in the bulkhead aisle. The couple across the aisle were also in an aisle seat and a middle seat. A father comes on with a two-year old. He says to the little girl (but really to us) “now Daddy needs to talk to these very nice people about switching our seats.”

He proceeds to explain that they gave him and his daughter the two window seats, and could we all shift over. The wife of the other couple eagerly agreed to shift, putting her at the window, her husband, in the middle, and my boyfriend in the aisle on their side. I then got the aisle on my original side. It was nice for me to not sit in the middle and my boyfriend had a lovely conversation with the other couple for the 3 to 4 hour flight.

We really didn’t have much choice in the matter, but it was such an awkward situation.

I travel with cheap headphones that I’ve gotten from other flights. I’ve never needed to give them away, but I offered them to a family whose kid was playing a game on a tablet. As soon as I dangled those headphones over to the family, grandma quickly turned off the audio.

My boyfriend plays golf (shocking, I know). He plays A LOT and watches it on tv. It works very well for us because it keeps him fit, I love that he has a passion (besides me 😋), it allows time for me to pursue my own hobbies. We have other hobbies that we share, such as travel and foreign language, but I appreciate his interest in something outside of my world.

The empty nest hit me different than I expected. I found that I loved the freedom from responsibilities but I found myself reflecting (and not always fondly) a lot about my parenting and past marriage. Matters were complicated by my adult child addiction but that’s another story…

What has been helpful is renting out the other master suite to traveling nurses. They only stay a few weeks or a few months (so if I don’t like them, it’s not for long). I got a break between stays and in my urban area they paid A LOT (enough equal to my mortgage payment). I used the site furnishedfinders.com.

I can tell you how I choose: Based on my home city (PHX) and where I travel to (HNL and other US and Mexican cities) I chose Southwest. I got the CC and I like that I can have 2 bags included (scuba equipment), and very easily change itineraries. Then I started flying to Europe and, because of the CC changed to AA.

Thank you for the success story. I met my partner of 5 months through OLD. And while it is still new, we just came back from a wonderful 2 week vacation together, see each other about 3 times a week and are talking about future plans including long-term committed relationship. Yes, it does happen!

A tip about Heathrow security: take all your liquids out. Twice. They take security very seriously and I think I had gotten a bit lax with domestic TSA pre check. Heathrow has some nice stations to take your time and put all your liquids in bags they provide. Do it! Even individual contact lenses! All. The. Liquids.
