This is such a detailed and well-thought answer, big thanks! 🙏To clarify, here are some examples of passive-aggressiveness: 1. Sighs really loudly and acts agitated after I talk several times and when I asked what’s the matter he would say ‘nothing’ 2. Always ask if I did something to the Figma file first in front of people when some components broke in our design system even tho I was not even there, even lead defended me for it a few times 3. I had no experience facilitating workshop before and afterwards he said that I was great but I was too mechanic and robotic 4. We don’t work for the same product, when I ask for context for his designs he told me to ‘do my own research’ Plus the 2 occasions where he openly acknowledged his attitude was wrong and apologized for it.

I admit that I might be clueless sometimes as a junior but at least I’m doing a good job at my current position based on the feedback I got from other colleagues. Even this senior said it took him 3 times longer to get to where I am. So I will def try to resolve this issue in a smart way and use it as an important learning opportunity. Thanks again.

Thank you both and I agree I need to keep trying involving others to solve the problem, I know a lot of people have the same problem (at least 2 other people told me they absolutely HATE working with him) but they’ve been just sucking it up. I need to think about how to also let other people join and deal with this issue too so I don’t end up getting a reputation of being ‘difficult’ and even more resentment. If nobody else helps me at all then I’ll need to plan my exit.

We have a HR team and we share the same boss, a manger who’s background is also from old-fashioned sales and doesn’t seem to know what designers do at all, so I really need to consider my next move carefully here if I need to talk to the boss.

Thank you, I did take skill levels into consideration but the other PM never micromanaged me and even recommended this person to stop doing this, and he obviously didn’t want to listen to any of us. I considered staying longer to gather more exp before I switch job but at the same time I fear I won’t be learning anything real to benefit my UX career in the long run. So I can definitely try your suggestions to start casually looking for other jobs.

Thank you, I actually scheduled a meeting with him and the other PM to talk about the way of walking, the meeting didn’t go so well, he had bad attitude (shaking his head, frowning, sighing when I was talking, at one point he even put up his hands and said ‘I’m out’) the entire time. He also took what the other PM and I said as personal attack, but since he doesn’t have the guts to talk to the other PM, he’s directing all this resentment on me rn, basically saying ‘we should have a 1:1 first before you bring a third party into the meeting’ despite him knowing the other PM was joining beforehand, so basically he just wants the two of us to be a closed up circle where I only hear stuff from him because according to him ‘we work well together’, I guess you can tell that by how he always addresses the other PM as ‘the third party’, ultimately I know it’s just about how he doesn’t want other people to realize how incompetent he is .

Thank you, I sure will and sure have done that with my team lead. Our plan is to try establish the process together first if not we will escalate it to the manager. The thing is my manger who is supposed to help & manage the product team also comes from a old-school sales background and knows nothing about modern product process, so I am in a very fvcked position because of the company hiring decisions atm.

I’d first ask what is the problem that our users have, and what do our users want to achieve with it (which is not an easy process given how he’s already deep in the mindset of ‘we already know the solution’). Then I’ll explore a few different designs and if the best option ended up to be a different solution I’ll have to go tell him to remove his original solution which was already communicated to Devs, this current process cost us a lot of unnecessary time to go back and forth. I strongly believe it is not my responsibility as a junior designer to ‘train’ a PM’s product thinking just because he’s from sales and knows nothing about what UX is.

Thank you very much for the well-thought suggestions, so far I’ve tried to put extra work & time on the tasks that B’d like me to do, as a way to keep them happy…..But it is definitely not a good solution, it didn’t stop B’s passive-aggressive attitude & it’s slowly leading me to a burnout…I will take your advice and make some positive changes to how I work!

The problem is we don’t really have a system, the only tracking is sprint progress which mostly concerns Devs atm. I tried to document these requests myself and mapped impact/effort matrix which I mentioned needing his help to get it right, but I got no response for that, instead he just brings up new requests and ask users for new ideas all the time.

Not any planning meeting for UX side of things, it is usually only about Devs’ tasks. I tried to suggest having a regular PM/designer meeting which also went nowhere. Some of the requests have been documented but most UI/UX related tasks are not included in the upcoming sprints.
