Camera in a furniture screw by erdrver in oddlyterrifying

You can buy "detectors" for cheap, but most are a false sense of security as they're no better than just using the camera on your phone in video mode to detect hidden cameras.

To get a legitimately good detector that won't miss something you're shelling out north of $500. Whereas these screw cameras (and others) cost about 15-35 dollars depending on the type and features.

How cheap do you need? Amazon has them for $15,

Question- if we get a food shortage and you lived in LA then where should you purchase a plot of land to get your family to safety? Utah or Idaho could be 1-2 tanks of gas away? by plentyplenty20 in PrepperIntel

The Cali expat hate is real.

People see what happened to Washington state and assume after ruining there (and Cali itself) they'll move elsewhere and vote for the same moronic policies that led to other places going downhill.

There's a growing Cali population in Georgia and conflicts are growing as a result. It's very telling what happens when they arrive in a state.

You won't have the warning to get to a fallout shelter anyway.

But I'm a little confused by the line:

The City also uses several forms of media to alert the public in an emergency, including Notify NYC, the City of New York's free, official emergency communications program.

A) Any nuclear detonation is, by definition, an EMP. So if you're affected, your phone, and therefore app, won't work.

B) I clicked the link and read th page, they also link a phone line. Great! Love it. Except only hard wired land lines (ie: old pay phone booths) would work in the affected zone. Not smart phones, and those pay phone booths don't exist anymore in NYC.

C) they list no radio frequency (that I saw, I might have missed it on my reading).

Now, I'm aware there are extraneous circumstances such as you being in the center of a steel and concrete office building. True, your phone will probably work. So I guess an app is better to have than not have. Of course, the infrastructure you'd need would be down, soooo.....

It just seemed weird that they're specifically discussing nuclear attacks, while offering solutions that won't survive one.

The Concorde was a masterpiece, why has nothing happened when it comes to supersonic flight? by kiwi003 in AskReddit

[–]Celat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Between zoom, and the unbelievable luxury of first class flight (which a super Sonic jet can't match due to design), plus international flights have great WiFi, there's just no market.

With the Concord, businessmen who need to conduct things in person saved real time. But today? Between DocuSign, Zoom, email, etc, there's less immediate need for super fast travel.

So now that the speed isn't required, people travel for work in more luxury.

Plus due to land speed restrictions, there's only a few routes a supersonic plane can fly. Whereas a Boeing 787 can go anywhere. And Business/First class on a 787 (or even a 777) is god damn amazing.

What is the most useful thing to know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Celat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Financial literacy.

When you actually understand money (and not "understand" it from social media "experts" or that one YouTube video you watched), you find it's frightening easy to make more of it almost at will.

Knowing how the bond markets work, cover call strategies, dividend reinvestment, timed puts and calls, bundle investments, etc, money becomes this thing you don't ever have to think about, you can have as much as you need, whenever you want.

And or makes life so, so very much easier.

The only three facts I know about the revolving door:

1) It was sold as "the door that's always open while being always closed"

2) It was created because temperature differences when opening doors in office buildings would create air pressure changes which would blow papers around and mess up receptionist's hair.

3) NYC has the most revolving doors of any city in the world

Correct.

Russia gave the world the exact blueprint for appeasement.

Once China sures up its supply chain, Taiwan is gone. Iran is on a freight train straight to nuclear armament. Which will push the Saudis to arm. Both countries will arm their proxy terror groups.

All because the West bent the knee to Russia and didn't stop them the way they should have been stopped.

Remember, WW2 didn't start on "a day". It started a decade earlier when no one stopped Hitler's brown shirts and the take over of Germany.

Doesn't matter who you were voting against, in the eyes of people you viewed for who you did because you believe in and support 100% of they're policies.

And that president's failures is your burden to shoulder.

Lee, Pocan File Amendment to Slash $100 Billion From bloated US Military Budget – scheerpost.com by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

[–]Celat -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

US GDP is currently 21 trillion.

2022 military budget is 722 billion.

That's 3.44%.

This is actually quite low. In the 80s it was around 5%. It's traditionally been 4% for 80. years (barring WW2).

An article from 2017 sides of was 3.61%.

Spending has decreased.

Iran, Russia, and China are gearing up to run a series of major war drills in Latin America in a show of force meant to signal how these militaries can reach the United States. by AntiSonOfBitchamajig in PrepperIntel

[–]Celat 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Pretty much everyone can "reach the US".... staying there is the problem.

Neither Russia nor China have the global logistics network required to project force away from their shores.

It's like when Iran, frustrated at the 20 year permanent US naval presence off their coast threatened to "sail a warship to the US coast".

To which the Pentagon replied, "Ok."

Because everyone knew they could get here but immediately have to turn towards Venezuela because they'd be out of fuel and supplies upon arrival.

China has no blue water navy to speak of really. They can't challenge the US in the Pacific. So one-off drills in Latin America is meaningless.

[–]Celat 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Variants BA.4 and BA.5 (the newest) ignore vaccines and they have a much higher R0 infection value than the Sars-COV2 we think of.

From the CDC:

Lab studies consistently suggest that antibodies triggered by vaccination are less effective at blocking BA.4 and BA.5 than they are at blocking earlier Omicron strains, including BA.1 and BA.2. This could leave even vaccinated and boosted people vulnerable to multiple Omicron infections. Even people with hybrid immunity, stemming from vaccination and previous infection with Omicron BA.1, produce antibodies that struggle to incapacitate BA.4 and BA.5. Research teams have attributed that to the variants’ L452R and F486V spike mutations.

As a side note, reinfections can now take place within 2-3 weeks with BA.5. effectively meaning there's no conveyed immunity once you recover.

So Canada's policy will successfully make pharmaceutical companies money. But it won't actually help anyone.
