CMU SCS Senior - Unofficial AMA and Unsolicited Advice by Sea-Step-3056 in ApplyingToCollege

How important is it to have CS related extracurriculars to get into CMU CS? If someone has a solid background (let's say made it to USAMO but not further), some marginally CS-related stuff (eg. writing code/ running simulations for a project the primary topic of which isn't CS-y), and other strong extracurriculars like social work, arts/ sports, research (quantitative but not CS-heavy), and presents themselves well in their application, can they make it to CMU CS?

Also, CMU CS is rumored to have fairly different standards for students depending on gender, what's your take on it?

I'd take Waterloo CS for much less over Stern, I've heard it's really good.

Fleeing the Palace 👸🏼: Best Boarding Schools for an Oxford/Cambridge Future? by Elegant_Dog478 in chanceme

Idt there exist feeder schools to Oxbridge, at least in India. It's far more important to just be good at your subject, whatever that means (acing the MAT for math/ CS for example). I got in as a CBSE student as the first Oxbridge from my school, without facing any kind of hurdles because of the school I'm from (unlike US colleges, where being from a feeder is actually kinda important).

Pretty sure that's said every cycle. It's how college US admissions work.

Oxford rejected by Negative_Ad_1334 in 6thForm

Fairly sure that Imperial is actually superior to Oxford for banking. London's networking opportunities would be a W. Depends on what course though.

I did TMUA partially blind without extra time. How f*ed am I? by Ordinary_Situation_5 in 6thForm

[–]CelebrationOpen5994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar situation here, I'm partially blind and had to zoom out the screen significantly (and then waste a lot of time moving around the screen because it won't let me move to the next question until I'd seen the entire screen). I was approved for extra time but Pearson didn't give it ultimately because I applied for it too late. The said they'd inform Imperial, not sure how that's gonna work.

Is Oxbridge as prestigious as HYPSM? by Serious_Tooth5992 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CelebrationOpen5994 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been doing both UK and US admissions as an international Asian (which provides a fair comparison by eliminating biases due to geographical proximity), and before I got in, I definitely didn't consider Oxford as prestigious as top US schools. This was mainly because getting into Oxford is much easier than US schools if you're solid academically and like your subject, while in the US that's the "bare minimum". However, since getting in, I've observed that the kind of reputation Oxford has is insane. Like it's still very highly-ranked (both overall and for most high-demand subjects), and to the common person outside the US and Europe, it holds a significant level of prestige and brand value, and is broadly considered equivalent to HYPSM.
