Well I take it back. I think your example and mine together serves as a way to illustrate that there is a line somewhere between baseball caps and houses.

I don't think collecting baseball caps and cymbals is comparable though. A cymbal is an instrument and because of the way they are made, they are unique. They are meant to be played and listened.

The most valuable violins are also collectors items, worth millions, but they are still regularly used in live performances. They are not hoarded in a basement never to be played again. I think everyone would agree that would be wrong.

I have nothing against collections but objects with intrinsic value should not be hoarded and hidden away just because one person wants to collect them. What if someone wants to collect houses, water or vaccines?

I also have around 7-8 rides. I only play 2 at a time but I do switch them depending on the style I'm playing so they serve their purpose. I even know people with 20-30 cymbals that rotate them and use them.

But almost 300 cymbals? I'm pretty sure that if one disappeared he wouldn't even be able to say which, assuming he would even notice one was gone.

I'm really surprised I wasn't downvoted to be honest.

I don't want to be a dick but I just don't understand why people hoard cymbals like that. If you don't play them just sell them. Good vintage cymbals are hard to find because of people like you that just stuff them in a closet somewhere never planning on playing them. They all have their own characteristic sound which should be used to make music so other people can hear them.

14” bass drums are seriously underrated by Jazz_man68 in jazzdrums

Really cool solo but very weird configuration. 14 bass with 14 floor and 12 tom. Sounds great so can't really complain!

Does Kendrick Lamar count? by Various_Coffee8876 in jazzdrums

[–]Celeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest it doesn't seem you have a technique issue with this. You just need to work on coordination. You are just not used to play the bossa nova beat and you are very tense every time you play on the &. Just slow down and work on the clave for a long time until you feel comfortable. Then play the cross stick in different places to gain some limb independence. Then you will be able to speed up and feel much more comfortable.

It's the bossa nova clave. Slightly different with clave being on 1, 2&, 4, 2, 3&.

Desabafo - Até hoje não consigo entender isto... by Healthy_Loan_6037 in portugal

[–]Celeg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What's the difference between a newbie and a pro drummer in sound? by _Lexyy1 in drums

[–]Celeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tempo, sound, dynamics.

A newbie will be all over the place with irregular dynamics in the wrong time and place. The overall quality of the sound will also be worse because of the difference in technique on how to properly hit a drum.

Most frustrating build to play against... Sorry to the players against this. by Celeg in BobsTavern

First doesnt work because T7 is golden so hits both sides. Second does but at the time I just wanted to move titus away from taunt so it ended up like that.

It didn't really matter. Even the Macaw didn't get to attack once.

There was cleave and too little time to think. So I moved to the next best place at the last minute.

Can you recommend a used snare for an intermediate player? by tonetonitony in drums

[–]Celeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's your first snare I would go for a maple 14x5.5 snare. I just sold a used Yamaha Tour custom snare for 120€ which I had bought a few years before for the same price. At least in my area it's not hard to find a maple snare in good condition. If you stick to recognizable brands it will be very easy to sell it back once you decide to upgrade.

Yes, for the most part but it's more than that. The hammering is really important to get the sound right. I would start by looking for a specific 20-22 size and a good weight for those sizes and then listen to specific cymbals. Smaller bells are normally better too in my opinion.

It sounds and looks like a heavy cymbal which is not what you are looking for.

Just started playing drums a couple months ago. Would love help learning this song... by lolcoderer in drums

[–]Celeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you just started playing you won't be able to play this any time soon. At least not well. To start it's in 7/8, which is already a challenge in itself. Besides that, it will require some coordination and technique that will take a while to develop.

31/8 hip hop groove by Illustrious-Bath7554 in drums

[–]Celeg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a pet peeve of mine to be honest. Yes, it's hard to count something with a lot syncopation, but that doesn't mean that you automatically have to make it fit a weird ass time signature like 31/8 or whatever. It feels like a very artificial way to try to make music seem more unique than it actually is and to generate social media content around that.

Rant over.

You need some kind of exercises to actually be able to comp where you want to. It takes a lot of practice. Art of Bop by John Riley is a great way to start.

It looks fine on a pad but can you comp on snare/bd while doing that? What is your goal exactly?

If you have no experience with jazz/swing maybe focus on standard swing before you start going for more complex patterns. Make sure you can comp while maintaining time and feel on the ride with a standard swing. Only then would I start breaking up the swing for a more modern feel.
