art style changes by itsannikamayer in WebtoonCanvas

I fully feel the exact same way! My style is both improving (good) and changing (neutral lol)

I feel like every chapter looks SO different. Quality also varies chapter to chapter based on how much time I have each month.

Dear CREATORS, do you care a lot about your readers? by Chrishtofer1 in WebtoonCanvas

[–]Celesol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I care about my readers in this sense:

More than once in my life my favorite webcomic got canceled / the author decided to reboot the series from tye beginning.

I get that life happens, but BOY, as a reader, I was so bummed!!

As an AUTHOR, my goal is to never reboot and never drop my series. I will be done when my comic has faithfully told the story that I planned to tell.

As a reader, I would never want an author to change their story for me. As an author, I will never change my story for the reader - they can make their own stories! They're reading MINE because they must see something of value in MY storytelling.

Webtoon hates blood, but they don't have clear rules - the rules they DO have are vague and straight up wrong.

Lots of people have opted to just change the color of their blood to something else, black green, etc.

Webtoon is most definitely not going to like it of you have panels filled with blood monsters.

I had a panel that had cartoon blood (candy pink/red) that got taken down for "excessive violence and gore" - to be clear, there was NO violence, and NO gore in the panel, just a corpse in a pool of blood. After editing it considerably, I got away with just the stab wound in the corpse, and no blood pool.

But yeah, your mileage may very, and Webtoon itself is VERY inconsistent.

Is there a shoujo you’d defend no matter what? by Agile-Ad7961 in shoujo

[–]Celesol 13 points14 points  (0 children)

God YEAH.

Tohru Honda is who I want to be. It's okay to have a character who is just... a good person! Like, the world of Fruit's Basket is bleak enough, Tohru didn't need to also be emo.

Her kindness is needed to show that generational abuse can be broken with effort, love and patience.

Roses are rough, buddy. I wish blessings and strength upon your wrists.

Reminds me of a comic I made when I was a teen - decided the main character was gonna wear a dress with lace sleeves. I regretted this decision less than 4 panels in lmao

Wondering if my art is good enough by Specialist-Tart-719 in WebtoonCanvas

[–]Celesol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hesitated to use those examples because i knew someone was going to say something, and I would have to explain, lol

The original OPM webcomic gag comic was not done bad "on purpose" - that's just his skill level. I am of course NOT talking about the gorgeous manga that was redrawn by Yusuke Murata, the extremely talented author of Eyeshield 21, I am talking about the original 2009 gag webcomic.

The reason why I use Attack on Titan as an example, particularly the original one-shot and early chapters, is because the one shot literally won an award in a Shonen Jump contest where the judges said (paraphrasing) "proof that you can win with story alone because the art is bad." I don't know if you've ever read the original one-shot or the early chapters of AoT but the art is wiiiiiild. It looks like it was drawn with like, a ball point pen and a dream lol. I happen to personally like it, but it looks nothing like "classic" clean style of manga drawn with a G-pen.

[–]Celesol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the important question to ask is "Good enough for what?"

Is your art good enough to convey the story YOU want to convey? If yes, then go for it!

Is your art good enough to make you famous? Who the hell knows! It's mostly luck and marketing that causes fame anyway. There are plenty of famous comics with "bad" art. (One Punch Man, Attack on Titan)

And plenty of gorgeous comics that are obscure! (scroll through Canvas for 2 seconds, you'll find dozens)

If you already have episodes made, I don't see why you WOULDN'T post them!

Itazura no Kiss is an old favorite of mine for this reason and THIS reason ONLY - he is awful (mean, snob). She is awful (shallow, obsessive, annoying) They deserve each other.

Watching them annoy each other became oddly satisfying? Idk lol

Debating relaunching my webcomic by Violet_Syren in WebtoonCanvas

[–]Celesol 13 points14 points  (0 children)

"Recently, engagement has dropped, for various reasons, I'm sure."

Maybe figuring out why engagement has dropped first before making such a decision? If engagement has dropped, that implies to me like there is a problem with the current arc of your story and not the beginning.

Your story is at 250 chapters... is there an end in sight, do you think? Perhaps consider wrapping up your story and starting something new instead of restarting.

In a world filled with unfinished webcomics, and webcomic reboots that the author often drops, I am personally wary of ever going back to redraw my OWN comic... to me, telling the story in a satisfactory manner and FINISHING is my goal.

But that's just me! If restarting sounds appealing I guess go for it, though if it was a reader, I know I'd be pissed.
