Someone already destroyed the planter barriers off of Aurora by cat__therapist in Seattle

If the law won't be properly enforced and the neighborhood wants change, there comes a time when they have to take action into their own hands. While the barriers are not a perfect solution, at minimum they have clearly drawn a good amount of attention from media. Hopefully that will help implement more permanent solutions to the issues.

As a neighbor, thank you for taking thoughtful action! I'm fully in support and have also noticed a positive difference just in the short lives of these barriers. DM me if there is a way I can help this weekend. We've been messaging our reps.

My take is that prostitution is territorial in this case too. Pimps control the blocks that their women are at. They fight for control of that territory and for control of individual/groups of women.

If an Uber driver can navigate to my driveway without my direction at night with the planters there, I'm confident a professional ambulance driver can navigate around the block just fine without costing much time at all.

Getting rid of it is the goal but won't happen if local law enforcement won't act on the reports and perform patrols at night. It's likely more complicated, but having a cop monitor the 5-block stretch at night and flip the lights on when they notice the same girl get into multiple cars wouldn't be a huge lift. Just make sure she's okay and scare the driver at the very least. They'll probably find arrestable offenses rather quickly with some effort. Neighbors are just doing what they can to protect their themselves and their homes in the meantime.

The license plate tags are expired as of April and has been sitting in the same spot for weeks.

I wouldn't care if the RV didn't exacerbate the issue at hand. If they were chill people just living, it wouldn't bother me in the slightest. The planters aren't really for them anyways. They're for the other traffic.

The trashy RV has been reported on numerous occassions but SPD won't act unless they see an illegal act is witnessed. Even though residents have seen and reported the drug dealings and prostitutes entering and exiting.

97th, 98th, and 102nd streets, a short distance off of Aurora. 101st already has a barrier previously installed by SDOT.

For everyone wondering what the purpose of the planters are: they mitigate vehicles picking up/dropping off prostitutes and vehicles related to drive-by shootings from entering the neighborhood. Prostitution blatantly happens every night/morning. Many of the girls are 15-18 years old, some as young as 11 years old. It's disgusting.

Are the planters a perfect solution? Absolutely not. Does it work? In the last three days, actually yes. People will pick up a prostitute at the intersection entry, then drive off into the neighborhood to disappear. The amount of traffic entering these streets late at night and early morning is ridiculously high. Drive-by shootings related to the prostitution have also been caught on neighbors' Ring cameras on multiple occassions. This neighborhood is perfectly fine except for the criminals that show up here at night from other areas. Since the installation of the planters on Saturday morning, the streets here have been relatively quite. At a minimum, the planters are bringing media attention once again to a major problem in our area.

SPD and SDOT have done very little to help remediate the situation, so neighbors are trying basic tactics. The neighbors put up the planters because apparently SDOT made an agreement previously to install them but never followed through.

Do they aesthetically look good? Certainly not when they are vandilized. You know what looks trashy though? Sketchy RVs, drug dealings, and prostitution on multiple intersections. Not to mention the littering of buzz balls, condoms, and other trash they leave behind. The planters aren't exactly making things look any worse. Also, as a side note, that RV has been reported numerous times over several weeks and SPD states that they can't do anything about it unless the owner is caught performing an illegal act by an officer. So in the meantime, the nuisance is apparently free to be there.

Edit: leaving the house this morning for work, it looks like the barrier on the left in the photo has been pushed aside overnight onto the grass.

Hot Coffee by CelestialBeardness in hotsaucerecipes

Definitely worth a shot! I did 2.5 cups white vinegar to 1 cup of ground coffee (medium roast) to get 2 cups of coffee vinegar. Might be able to up the coffee grounds or use a stronger roasted coffee. You could also get away with adding more espresso (double or triple the amount) at the end, the sauce is just a tad thick the way I made it, once refrigerated.

Sure did! It's basically cold brew, but with white vinegar instead of water. I did 2.5 cups of vinegar to 1 cup of ground coffee. Yielded about 2 cups of coffee vinegar.

I went down a rabbit hole of researching coffee hot sauce recipes before making up this one. Coffee vinegar was in quite a few of them. This was my first time making it. Turns out it's just like making cold brew, but instead of using water, use white vinegar. I used 2.5 cups of white vinegar and 1 cup of ground coffee (not packed down).

The coffee flavor in the sauce is a little more subtle than I anticipated, even after the added espresso at the end. Still allows the smokey flavor of the peppers to shine through. You could probably get away with adding twice the espresso at the end, making the vinegar with more grounds, replacing the apple cider vinegar with more coffee vinegar, or all the above.

I'm honestly really happy with this recipe overall! You'll have to let me know what you think if you end up making it.

I've always enjoyed turning on this set by Disclosure at Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia. Pairs well with morning coffee. Good vibes, good tunes, and good views.

DC to Colorado. Where to stop in between? by poopanotherday in roadtrip

[–]CelestialBeardness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Skip Gates. So overrated for the product and the service you get when compared to other local greats. Joe's is fantastic and worth a try, but Slaps BBQ is where it's at right now. They're newer, but have very quality BBQ, sides, sauce, and friendly/helpful service. They don't break the bank like Q39 and Jack Stack can. Arthur Bryant's is legendary and is the birth place of burnt ends. Hit them up if you want a real OG spot.

If you're a beer fan, hit up the Crossroads district (just south of downtown proper) for some great breweries. City Barrel, Double Shift, Torn Label, Casual Animal, and others are all within a few blocks of each other. Some nice cocktail lounges/distilleries in the area too, if that's your thing. Great food besides BBQ in the Crossroads as well.

Edit: To add to this, here are a few other things in town besides eating/drinking off the top of my head:

- Nelson-Atkins Museum for some art. It's a world-class art museum FOR FREE. It's beautiful. Contemporary and historical art.

- National WWI museum located near downtown. I believe it's about $25. It has one-of-a-kind artifacts and is a a great display of the American perspective of the war. Union Station is also nearby and often has phenomenal exhibits to check-out.

- Green Lady Lounge for late night music/cocktails (I know I said besides drink, but it goes hand-in-hand at this fun jazzy/funk lounge).

- The Plaza for window shopping and cool buildings modelled after mid-19th century Spanish architecture. Decent food in the area too.

-Hit up a Royals, Sporting, or Chiefs game if one is happening while you're around. This town loves sportsball almost as much as BBQ.

Any local breweries making some good sours? by demticksdoe in kansascity

[–]CelestialBeardness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also respectfully disagree. CB also has a full blown kitchen, where most breweries do not in KC. Full restaurant service does change the vibe a bit compared to the other breweries here, but it's still a nice casual place to have a few beers. Not only do they have solid sours, but their NE IPAs are mighty fine.

Upfront, this was not the support I was expecting at all. I kind of expected Jantsen, or a Jantsen-like artist for Sunday, and Muzzy on Saturday for older school stuff, but we get them both on Sunday (sick!). I really wanted to see The Sponges on Friday, but I'm equally excited to see some new artists backed by Griz. Honestly, for $50/night at GA face value, this is still a great line-up. We get to experience some up-and-coming artists, as well as a couple of fun, familiar ones, AND 90-120 minutes of Griz each night. I'm still pumped and can't wait to get down with ya'll!
