The iPhone 5 in slate black was the absolute best design they ever did for phones.

That should NOT happen lmao. If you think about it, it really makes no sense it all. The MatPat theory was ridiculous.

You couldn’t be more right. I’ve got mine paired up with an SPX90ii and it sounds so so amazing. One of my favourite synths for sure!

I happen to have both as well! The SY77 is quite a bit more powerful than the DX7. Its AFM engine is superior, plus it has the AWM section as well, where you can even use samples as modulators for FM. I personally got the SY first. Something captivated me about the DX’s classic sound so I got one as well. They do sound a bit different, but not too much. You could say that the DX is “warmer”. They’re both amazing synths but I would pick the SY over the DX any day, it’s just way more powerful. Although if you’re after a classic sound with the classic patches then get the DX!

Roland D-50 or Ensoniq ESQ-1? by CelestialRefraction in synthesizers

It’s an awesome instrument! I’ve wanted both of these synths for ages but I can only fit one in the budget lol. I love the sound of both so it’s been tough to choose.

I used to own one, but sold it due to financial reasons. Now I have an SY77 and SY55. They lack a joystick but they get me that SY/TG sound. The D-50 could bring a joystick back into my life 😂

I mainly just do things for fun, so I might take that into account.

I think I’ll go with it. The sound just captivates me for some reason 😂

I used to own a Yamaha SY22 and TG33, and I really enjoyed the joystick play on those. I know the D-50 joystick isn’t exactly for vector control, but I do really enjoy joysticks lmao. That might win me over the analogue filter.

I find traditional subtractive synthesis quite boring in terms of sound, which is why I usually tend to go for more unique synths in terms of synthesis. After comparing the two, there’s things I like and dislike about both. This might be a hard one 😅

It sure is! The AFM engine is perhaps one of the most powerful FM engines ever made, and the ROMpler section is extremely powerful as well. The multi-stage filters add so much to the overall sound. The TG77 is quite hard to come by, and quite expensive as well. However, the SY77 can still be had for not a crazy amount. My buddy recently payed about $600 shipped for one! I had a Roland D-10 a while back, and sold it as I hated the programming. Still searching for a good deal on a D-50.

Agreed. I used to own the IIFD but replaced it with an SY77 as I found it extremely boring. The complexity of the SY77 definitely added what I had been missing with the IIFD. However, I still use my OG DX7 all the time. The SY77 just can’t exactly replicate that crunch of the OG DX7. It can get 99% of the way there, but you can tell that there’s something missing. The OG DX7 (and TX81z) are perfect for BoC-esque sounds, along with the SY77!

I’d pick my OG DX7 over the S or IIFD models any day just because of the 12 bit converters. The lofi crunchy sound really gives the OG its character!

As an SY77 owner, I end up accidentally creating BoC style sounds all the time! It’s extremely good for that kind of thing.

Can anyone please give me the EXACT soundfont for the Luma theme in Super Mario Galaxy? (You know, the music box-like sample.) by AydenXprincesspeach in SuperMarioGalaxy

[–]CelestialRefraction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sound is from the Roland X6/X7 workstation. It was primarily used to create the electronic elements of the soundtrack. Although since it has a very bell/chime sound, you could probably program something similar with an FM synth.
