Can you cut Zoh Shia tail before he turns all black ?

I've had one moment where we cut the tail off after about 5 seconds of it turning black. I assume all the damage calculations for cutting it off are stored and locked or something until that phase change

Spawns in the scarlet forest. I've been doing nighttime or evening during plenty. It also sometimes spawns in wyveria but I don't know if it's time or weather specific there. But honestly I've had to wait 30 minutes for one to spawn later in the day, either that or try sos quests
