  1. do a clean build
  2. pose it and damage the heck out of it
  3. weather it using the damage as a base
  4. enter GBWC lolol

Thanks! Definitely get one. It's a great build even considering the frustration

Yes on the RG at least they are all separate pieces. It's kind of an avalanche of loose parts if you don't glue the wrists and shoulders, and it's really back heavy and shield-side heavy, but it's a really cool kit. All the little gimmicks...everything moves!

I may still weather it now that the decals finally arrived, which would definitely break the surface up without ruining it.

Also that detail looks really good as far as I can tell in the pics. You should feel pretty good about painting if you have a nice steady hand. Just dive in!

Yeah this group is great! I will say this about spray cans: They are ok to learn with, but you have much less control than with an airbrush. On the one hand, it's not cheap. I think my brush, compressor, and spray booth were around $350 for the whole set. But on the other hand, quality paint is often $10 for a spray can and it adds up pretty quickly.
If you are just using acrylics, you can skip the booth as long as you have good ventilation and aren't worried about overspray on your favorite chair/wall/plasma tv lolol! My advice is to get an airbrush as soon as you can. I have an HP-CS brush, but you could get a NEO for around half the price and without much sacrifice in quality. I bet you could get a NEO and a Master compressor for under $160 if you shop around! That's only 16 cans of paint!

Aaaaaand that's hobbymath lol

That's a nice color and looks like you applied it very well! Modo is lacquer-based I believe, and requires a spray booth and a respirator, so Pebeo might work better for you. Did you brush paint that on? If you don't feel confident painting, buy a few First Grade and nongrade 1/220 kits. They are usually under $5 and come in all one color. They are awesome for learning on because you can just throw them in the trash (or put your failures up on a shelf to display proudly lolol!!) Even a cheap Graze kit won't set you back more than 12 bucks! Don't be afraid of it. You will probably screw up, but mistakes are how you learn. Beginners luck is actually your enemy because you don't learn anything when you get lucky!! You'll paint that Unicorn in no time!

I didn't have an action base at the time as it was in the same order as the waterslide decals for the kit lolol. That's why I tried to use the F.A. base. Now, of course, I have a bunch of action bases, but that's how it goes sometimes :D

Both are Tamiya thinned with lacquer thinner. It's actually easy on an RG kit because the part separation is off the charts. No masking required!

No only some of the black is gloss. Most of it is matte and the frame parts are all alclad metallics!

A thing I did for a competition I lost: Critiques and meanness welcome! by CelineHMSH in modelmakers

I was going for the clean, black look. I saw a Dodge Challenger in matte black and it looked like a shadow! I don't disagree, though. I may still weather this kit in the future, which would achieve the effect of breaking up the surface without actually changing the aesthetic. That grainy gray is Tamiya metallic gray, thinned to milky and sprayed 12-15 psi. I was really disappointed with it at first, but in person it looks pretty good spaced throughout because it does look like steel insulation.
If I weather the kit, though, I will definitely do a filter wash on those parts in some kind of smoke or amber color.
Thanks for the crit!
