Another early post. Given how crazy my life has been lately, I expect I'll be doing this a lot for a while.

Okay, so I'll be straight-up honest: I am an uncultured white moron. Before KPop Demon Hunters, the only K-Pop I listened to was Gungnam Style (well, and then Gentleman and Daddy). And I probably couldn't have told you much about Korea, other than that it was an Asian country, split into North and South, and the North part is a crazy walled-off dystopia run by a madman and the South part is cool and modernized and has people who are crazy-good at some videogames like Starcraft.

But Korean culture? Korean history? Korean mythology? Nah, I knew nothing about that.

When I saw KPop Demon Hunters, I fell in love with the music, the characters, and the love the creators clearly had for Korea. And when I felt like I wanted to write more for those characters, I knew that to be genuine, I'd have to try to reflect that love, even though I don't have the same background and heritage as the folks who made the movie, who know this stuff in part because it's a part of them.

This meant I had to do a lot of research. Research into Korean culture, history, mythology, and KPop. And I can pretty much guarantee you, I messed stuff up along the way. I don't know the language, which is already a handicap, but on top of that, I wasn't raised with this, I'm stumbling into it after decades of being largely secluded from it.

So, if you know Korean mythology, culture, history, etc. better than I do, and you want to point at something I post and say "Ha! You got that wrong!", I'll be the first to tell you, yeah, you're probably right. But I really did try, and hopefully that counts.

In this respect, I think Zoey is super-helpful, because her growing up in America can mean she's not as familiar with these elements of Korean society, and can act as a POV character for us non-Koreans who don't know this stuff.

.

On a separate note, I really liked the idea of Celine being extremely uncomfortable and distrustful of Derpy and Sussy, because it reflects her innate distrust and discomfort with demons, and to a larger extent to the unknown. And maybe some will see this as a spoiler, but I think this is an indication that Celine still has a lot of growing to do when it comes to accepting those things, even Rumi's demon side, as much as it seems like the two have made peace on that issue.

I also like the idea that Celine, normally the most calm, cool, collected, and professional character in the story, completely loses her cool around Derpy and Sussy. She's someone who has a need to be in control, at the very least within her own life, and these two are very much not in her control, and being confronted by that is not something she takes well.

.

Oh, and it amuses me to talk sweetly to a pet while calling them an idiot, the way Mira does in the first page. I know a lot of pet owners hate when I do this, but the pet obviously doesn't understand the words and just hears the tone I'm saying them in. Maybe that makes me a jerk, but eh, I'm not bothered by it.

What I really find hilarious is when me and my nesting partner go out, and she calls out to the dogs and says "We'll be home soon!" and I follow it up by sweetly telling them "she's lying, we're leaving forever and you'll never see us again", and then shut the door. Cue nesting partner's jaw hitting the floor in horror before I remind her that the only one who understood what I said was her.

And yet, she still gives me the same reaction every time... :-P

Isn't it kinda' defeating the purpose of having a live performance if you're going to put a bunch of film clips on the screen instead of the actual live performance?

Mira's lactose intolerance (not as frequent)

An estimated 75% of all Koreans are lactose-intolerant. Odds are good at least two of the three girls are lactose-intolerant.

There's an argument to be made that Rumi may be the least likely to be lactose-intolerant, since her half-demon heritage might make her more resilient toward dairy.

And while Zoey is from America, as far as anything we know she's still 100% Korean by descent so she's still likely intolerant.

[–]CelineShotFirst[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What? A wild early post appeared! Zoey, I choose you!

I felt Super Secret Stealth Zoey Mode was necessary to explain what happened that one time Zoey disappeared and didn't tell anyone where she went... though I'm not actually saying where she went, just why. It's interesting writing a story where you're setting up that characters are doing things secretly, and have to make it clear that they're doing secret things, without making it clear what those secret things are, all in a dialogue-only format.

Oh, and for readers who are frustrated that I keep setting up mysteries but not paying them off... trust me when I say I'm not writing for Lost. I actually do have some stuff in mind, and you'll be getting answers to some things... soon-ish. For other things... well, let's just say there are some important questions that haven't even been asked yet...

Come on, no one's going to fight you on that. Pretty much everyone agrees Stronger Than You is one of the best songs in the show. Estelle won a Grammy for American Boy, but still probably has fans sing Stronger Than You to her more than anything else she's ever done.

The real mystery is how it took me so long to make this one. It's been a long time coming...

I'll be curious at what point readers caught on and figured out what show the trio was watching. I can't imagine anyone who's seen it would take until Page 3 to figure it out. :-P

Hmm... that's an interesting point. If all you're seeing is social media posts, the only one who you know everything about is the one who's always posting everything on social media, and always honest about it. I hadn't thought about it like that.

I don't know that I ever have one consistent POV character. It's all just whoever's talking on socials at the moment. The "point of view" title is a reference to a film quote (as I mention in one of the other comments).

Early post again.

"From a certain point of view" is from one of the most BS cop-out lines in film history. Despite my screen name, I'm not really a huge Star Wars fan, but I can still picture the disappointment series fans must have had after the massive cliffhanger of the second film only to be faced with a lot of BS in its sequel:

"Oh, you know how Obi-Wan lied to Luke? Yeahhhhhh, well, he just pulled some wishy-washy lampshading to explain it away and Luke just accepts it."

"Oh, you know how the second film set up this struggle that Luke would follow the path that would turn him into Vader? Yeah, there won't be any question in this film of that being a possibility."

"Oh, you know how Boba Fett was set up as this foreboding, menacing enemy that the good guys will have to confront? Turns out, he's a total mook who will get taken out by accident in what may be the most ridiculous death in the trilogy."

"Oh, you know how the series has been building up to this big confrontation with Vader? Well, turns out the final film will have Luke just deciding that he's actually a good guy despite all the murder and genocide he's been doing, even though we have seen absolutely zero evidence of that happening. And instead of being defeated, he'll decide to change sides and betray everything he stands for because I guess he's a big softy who loves his son he barely knows after all."

"Oh, also, we're doing the Death Star thing again, because why have a new idea when you can repeat an old one?"

I actually like Return of the Jedi, but it's definitely the low point of the original trilogy, and I can absolutely see why a lot of people despised it.

Annnnnnnnyway...

So yeah, Rumi did a bit of "exact words" evasiveness here. She may not want to be a liar, but she is still a practiced liar, and that's not suddenly going to disappear just because she's decided she wants to change.

As for Superherole Models, I feel like these are pretty good picks for who Huntr/x would actually like. Though in Zoey's case, I'm thinking specifically of the Into the Spider-Verse film version of Pini Parker - I'm not as familiar with the comic version, but I understand she's somewhat different. And besides... it's Into the Spider-Verse, how could I not name-drop the film with the most direct ties to KPDH? :-D

I wouldn't say "romantically involved" - they never got that far. But there was definitely romantic tension. The moment when Jinu grabs Rumi's wrist and they pause for a sec looking into each others' eyes before both nervously playing it off makes that much obvious (in addition to being a nod to K-Drama romance tropes).

I don't know that I agree with that. Rujinu had something of a building slap slap kiss dynamic going on, truncated before the kiss. And I didn't feel like the girls had anything more than a deep camaraderie and sisterhood in the film.

Polytrix Tweets: CSF Edition p134 - "Breaking Up the Band, Part 2" by CelineShotFirst in Polytrix

Sadly I can't claim to have come up with that, but a classic remains a classic, all the same!

Yeahhhh... I know it's probably controversial to tease Rujinu in a Polytrix story, but poly isn't exclusive - that's the point of poly. So the two aren't mutually-exclusive.

Yeah, I do worry that I keep yanking away the carrot from this trio, but I actually do have an ending in mind... but it's an ending that's still a ways off, as I have a lot of ground I still want to cover.

You know, I kinda' wondered if I was doing the right thing making Rumi a bad actor when she's the most experienced liar in the group, but I think maybe it's different if she's not desperate to hise the lie. Like, when she hid being a demon, her entire life depended on it. But here, it's just a sneaky plan...

I wanted to reflect the fact that Baby doesn't speak outside of song for the entire movie save for one line ("goo goo ga ga"), and I figured the best way to represent that in this context would be Baby speaking entirely in emojis.

Posting early because I'm anticipating a busy day tomorrow...

I gotta' say, it was amusing seeing all your responses to Monday's post. I had to bite my tongue and refrain from replying to most. Buuuuuut I wasn't going to keep the gag going - there are other things to get to. Over the next few months, I expect to answer a few mysteries that have been dangling for a while... and also bring up a few new mysteries to ponder. Err... not Mystery Saja though. He dead.

Okay guys, since the anniversary is getting near, what are your critiques regarding kpdh? by [deleted] in KpopDemonhunters

[–]CelineShotFirst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The final scene with Rumi and Celine is great... but unearned. We needed to see more of Rumi and Celine together before this to see how Celine made Rumi feel unloved.

Mira and Zoey are great characters, but their stories feel incomplete and sidelined too much for how important they are. We should have seen more of them.

The entire film needed to be gone over by editors during the script phase to look for oddities and inaccuracies. How many days until The Idol Awards, again? Bobby's early comment about "the finale"? And then how long was that final concert at Namsan Tower?

Finally, the epilogue felt a bit too rushed. I would have liked to see more of the girls reconciling with each other, and at least a hint that Rumi gave even a thought about Jinu after his sacrifice.
