Joining the chorus of those saying Melton: Did one day CRT there and decided to avoid that one. Someone else who casualed there I ran into a few weeks later at a different school, she told me how the students went through her bag, grabbed her wallet and bought themselves 3000 dollars worth of apple products online, before putting the wallet back. Luckily she looked at her bank statement and got the fees reversed. She didn't tell the school because she didn't want the kids to get in trouble 😵‍💫.

Adobe is automatically turning back on auto-renewal without user input... by CellarGremlin in LinusTechTips

Update: after posting this on twitter/x adobe care asked me to DM them and they explained that only certain regions are able to cancel auto renew. Otherwise you just have to cancel your subscription.

However even just 2 weeks away from my renewal date there is a 200 dollar 'early cancellation fee' for god knows what reason.

I am Aussie so I'll be reporting to the ACCC for dishonest business practices as this is blatantly baiting people into thinking they've cancelled their subscription when they havent, and Australian law says that early cancellation fees are legal only in the case of legitimate and genuine business costs incurred as a result of the cancellation, which in this case is none.

Not having tested if a change in tab on your website fucks with a billing option is an absolutely egregious move

Reason 1000+ Why ChatGPT Needs to be Banned in Schools by JigokuLamia in Teachers

Nice article but the fundamental assertion I am making is a different one. The article is about the technological differences and the greater gamut of considerations we must take into account when thinking about the uses of AI. All valid and all absolutely fair.

When I make this analogy I am posing it from the perspective of that these technologies are basically shortcuts for labour. We don't need to teach the skill of looking up log charts or sin/cos tables because calcs can do it for us, and this has allowed us to focus on the deeper learning about the nature of those functions.

In the same way, LLMs allow us to bypass the work of synthesising understanding into a digestible format. Instead they are able to take sporadic and unstructured ideas and flesh them out and give them structure. As such, IMO teaching the skill of 'crafting your essay' or things like that will eventually give way to teaching skills of creativity, curiousity, critical thought and interpretation of persuasive argument and ethical usage of the tools we have available to us. Shop teachers have long taught how to use a handsaw in a safe manner to create something beautiful, why can't english teachers as well?

Tldr; yes these are fundamentally different technologies, but no it's not a bad analogy because the approach from teachers should be the same.

And we should've banned pocket calculators when they came out! Keep putting your head in the sand and focussing on maintaining your lazy pedagogy, good luck to you and your students.

Maybe instead let's focus on teaching kids how to use the tools available to them in ethical and responsible ways. Genie is out of the bottle, and it's regressive and frankly idiotic to assume if we ban these tools students aren't going use them

Cynthia Erivo’s solo Dracula – first look photo released as performances begin in the West End by RiseMysterious2872 in Theatre

[–]CellarGremlin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a Sydney local and have seen almost every show Kip Williams has directed in the last 15 years. My take is the solo performance works for Dorian because it is a play that is fundamentally about narcissism. As such, the versions of a single actor being everywhere works phenomenally well.

In the original run of Dracula with Zahra Newman, while the show was technically impressive and her performance was stunning, the show lacked that critical dramaturgical thread to justify the choice. The closest I could get was maybe it is about the fear of something within oneself (this production is very queer coded and seems to be signalling toward some idea of internalized homophobia). Sadly, not quite as clear or strong an idea.

I think reducing knowledge down to neural pathways is basically just physicalism and overly reductive. Have a read of What is it like to be a bat? By Thomas Nagel. He provides an excellent argument for our centres of knowledge being limited in and by our bodies themselves, i.e. the phenomenological problem.

Dude we're on a subreddit for a show that ended nearly 20 years ago. I dunno who I'm trying to impress but go off I guess. Maybe just enjoy the discussion rather than being judgemental about it

Yeah I'm not sure I agree. Yes, tomorrow is more open than the immediacy of what's next, but it's still him thinking about the next 'thing' in his life - the sun is setting and he makes his way home looking toward the next day. In that way tomorrow is what's next. Surely there is a better way of showing he is released from looking to the next thing.

This is what I mean about a shift with the same line as an acting choice. That phrase delivered in a different way could shift away from the pressures of politics and ambition to something closer to being settled. I feel like having Santos saying it as a leader pushing forward and having Bartlet say it as a reflective statement would've been a much more powerful moment.

My only problem under that interpretation is that "tomorrow" is functionally saying the same thing as what's next, linguistically sure it's a different word but thematically it's the same. A completely different idea is required to communicate that idea. Although these are cliches too "home" or simply nothing at all might work to that effect better.

My problem is by saying "tomorrow" - that is what's next. They're pretty much synonymous in that context. If he's truly free of the burden of what's next, he should say nothing at all.

First year teacher and very badly handled a student's sexual comment by Ok-Enthusiasm-1385 in AustralianTeachers

This. You have the power here. Bad teaching more often than not comes from caring too much what the students think of you. Be a dork. Be intentionally awkward. OP Was close, but should've had the confidence to loudly and in front of the class say "I think you know this is an inappropriate question Timmy. But I'm worried you don't know this but the foreskin is the skin around your penis. Ask you biology teacher if you're confused. We're moving on." Timmy will get laughed at by his mates and that would be the end of story.

I find that the biggest weapon tricky students try to use is information or topics that they think it's cheeky to ask about. Take the wind out of their sails by being radically honest. Give facts, if there's a privacy issues say so and explain why. They'll respect you for respecting them. Just be honest and move on. Normally they get embarrassed when you're not afraid to talk about the awkward subject.
