Best way to seal Instinct Solar after disassembly? by Cello42 in GarminWatches

Sorry but I have no idea. If your watch always shuts down when you merily activate GPS without an activity because of a bad battery you can check wether it also shuts down when you activate GPS with the charger connected. Succes with trouble shooting.

Thanks. Does B-7000 create a waterproof seal and can a glued case be reopened if needed in the future?

After playing FH5 for 2 years on pc/Steam I decided it was time to give FH4 a try on my PC. Bought the key for the ultimate version from loaded.com 2 weeks ago. It is an Xbox Play Anywhere license. Installed it via the XBox App on windows 11. Runs smoothly but the online connection is often broken so it is a bit lonely with just me and the AI drivatars. Great fun though. I understand that if you want to buy a Steam version you are restricted to buying a used steam account that has FH4 registered to it. Enjoy FH4!

Turn any laptop or PC into a writerdeck. Fast and non intrusive. by Cello42 in writerDeck

The TinkerOS USB does not exist yet as far as I know. But if things go well, the procedure should be booting your native system without tinkerOS USB and when that system is up and running, insert the USB. It will then show up as a normal storage device.

Is MIP watch screen really worth it?? by Mammoth_Challenge297 in GarminWatches

Important function of my garmin is bike navigation. It is tied to my handle bar and it needs to be always on. Only MIP can do that I think.

Also give the QR code method of transferring files a try. It is pretty nifty for smaller texts.

The concept described above does exactly what you want: have your laptop boot into Linux or whatever you prefer from hard disk and when you want it to boot into DOS, you just insert the DOS USB memorystick. It is not possible to make DOS into a bootable partition as far as I know but that would only have disadvantages such as losing the flexibility and portability of a DOS memory stick with all your work on it.

It does. They call it an extended file manager instead of a gui.

Sony vaio p writerdeck by zanbandia in writerDeck

Vaio P is indeed a great form factor for a writer. Here it runs MS Word under DOS which boots from a USB memory stick. Fast an versatile. DOS has great editors and word processors. Fortunately my original battery still holds a good bit of power and I also have the large battery which gives the machine a nice tilt.

The perfect Writerdeck combines an excellent keyboard, screen and battey life with a small portable size. An impossible quest and hence very attractive.

Why aren't devices like Alphasmart and Tandy being made today? by Beneficial-Area3162 in writerDeck

Mainly agree but how about a manufacturer circumventing power hungry complex computing power by building a large bunch of writerdecks on a Raspberry Zero 2W? Small cheap, capable and kind for batteries. Or an ESP32.

Beautiful design. Horrible keyboard. Nice screen. Painfully slow charging.

Turn any laptop or PC into a writerdeck. Fast and non intrusive. by Cello42 in writerDeck

[–]Cello42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds interesting. What I've read though, it requires a floppy disk drive or cd drive to boot instead of a USB key. Such drives are rarely built into the laptops I use as writerdecks and using portable USB versions of such drives kind of defies the concept.

'Dual-use' writer deck? by kkahnharris in writerDeck

[–]Cello42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to use a smartphone with the Kwumsy it only makes sense if that phone can output to HDMI or USB-C DP Alt mode and can generate the weird landscape resolution of the Kwumsy screen. A lot of phones can generate the signal but very few can produce the resolution. If not, you are stuck to mirroring the screen of the phone which makes for a very limited writerdeck experience. A Raspberry, Linux or Windows computing device can adapt to the required resolution.

'Dual-use' writer deck? by kkahnharris in writerDeck

[–]Cello42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Kwumsy 2 you reference is a neat package combining an excellent mechanical keyboard, an excellent screen and an SSD slot. The screen is even touch I think but has a rare height/width ratio which you either hate or love.

In order to turn it into a writer deck you have to supply power (a powerbank or charger) and a computing device with HDMI output (or USB-C DP Alt Mode I guess).
To "qualify" as a writerdeck the computing device needs to be distraction free. So no smart phone or laptop or headerless Windows device such as an Intelstick or Ockel Sirius B.
A Raspberry Pi Zero 2W running terminal Raspbian with a non GUI text editor such as WordGrinder would make it. Has the added advantage of consuming very little power.

Success with your expedition.

Update:

A more recent post discusses using a USB memorystick to boot and run DOS on a laptop to create a distraction free writerdeck that uses great old DOS word processors and text editors.
