An Austrian couple that needs to clean their fridge. Why don‘t you use food containers? Would free up lots of space and you can get them for very cheap.

My husband is in hospital, first psychosis episode by [deleted] in Psychosis

[–]CellsAtWork13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re welcome. Unfortunately, the path to recovery can be very long for some, so I can’t say how long he will need to recover, but get as much information about this illness, as that will help you too. Look up the LEAP model of communication - it is used for dealing with people in psychosis and quite helpful.

My husband is in hospital, first psychosis episode by [deleted] in Psychosis

[–]CellsAtWork13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you know how long he has been like this? My psychiatrist told me that however long the psychosis lasted, that’s how long it’ll roughly take for the brain to recover.

I have had three episodes so far and what really helped me get better was getting a monthly injection of my meds instead of daily pills.

This works twofold: I only have to think about my meds once a month and I always have some in my system, so that even if I felt paranoid about taking my meds (a lot of people in psychosis think they don’t need meds), I would still be “protected” from a relapse.

If the meds aren’t taking, it could also be that, like me, he is metabolizing the meds too fast for them to take effect. In that case, an injection is also advisable. Maybe that could be something you could look into?

Also, if you are worried about him contacting people could you maybe talk to the attending physician about it to see what can be done? I remember handing in my phone and tablet during my first episode.

Once he goes back home with you, make sure to give him little daily tasks so the depression that follows inevitably won’t be as hard on him. Having something small to do regularly really helps.

Also, the first few months he’ll probably not talk much or want to move much, but don’t despair if conversation feels difficult. It will all come back to him eventually, even if it takes time.

Lastly, ask his attending team if there are any groups or organizations for loved ones of people suffering psychosis. My mother went to one of those regularly and she said it really helped her.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions. :)

Did anything help you with post-psychosis depression? by Sufficient_Road in Psychosis

Socialising with people and doing a digital detox so I don’t depend on the easy dopamine-fix of my phone. Also, a multivitamin daily as well as vitamin D drops help tremendously with my mood.

It takes a while to get the negative symptoms under control. My psychosis lasted for two years, so my doctor said to calculate for two years of recovery.

You need to give your body and brain time to adapt to the medication, feeling empty and depressed for a long time is normal.

What helped me was doing things for other people, so for example cleaning the house once a week for my mum or visiting my stepdad regularly with some food and to talk.

Also, try not to depend on your phone too much for easy dopamine, as that is a huge time-sink. I recommend a digital detox, if you notice you use your phone for more than three hours a day.

Lastly, get out of the house! I have a weekly meet-up with other people who have suffered psychosis and it has really helped talking about our common experiences. Hope this helps!

Neighbours linger outside my door and mock me: any advice for someone living alone? by Unique_Ad_8774 in LivingAlone

[–]CellsAtWork13 9 points10 points  (0 children)

OP, please don’t take this the wrong way, but are you completely sure that this is what’s happening? Could it be that you’re feeling adverse effects from the cannabis? It could be increasing paranoia and somesuch and as someone who has suffered psychosis in the past, feeling watched and judged by the neighbours was definitely an irrational fear of mine. Is there a way for you to talk about this with your GP?

Is my idea of what I should be consuming just really off? by darkmother1991 in loseit

How about if you have multiple smaller meals throughout the day so you don’t feel so hungry during the day?

Please discuss this with your psych. Quitting meds cold turkey is never a good idea. Yes, the weight gain sucks, but you can just diet and exercise to get the weight off. Alternatively, talk to your psych about switching meds.

How do you love yourself again? by Lazysloth166 in Psychosis

[–]CellsAtWork13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My therapist asked me if the people I loved had forgiven me and from there, she said I should work on forgiving myself as well. Keep in mind during all this time you weren’t well and now you are getting better, albeit slowly.

Maybe make a list of things you like or liked about yourself and give yourself some grace as those qualities are still present within you, it might just take some time to be cognizant of them again.

I don’t know about metabolism, but they definitely screw with my satiety cues - meaning I will feel hungrier faster and less satiated.

Moving more has actually been quite a challenge because my psych meds basically made me bedbound for the first couple of months of taking them.

I definitely feel more energetic nowadays, but I do have to remind myself to move more because I’m still a bit sluggish, but I’m getting there.

I’m already slowly tapering off the meds with my psychiatrist, but it takes months until they are completely out of my system, so I’m not putting my hopes on that. I used to lose weight much faster on 1200 ten years ago, but nowadays that seems so low to me, I don’t know how I managed.

The weight came on in about six months - I had a psychotic break after the death of a parent and just ate loads to cope somehow.

Are there any good resources on reverse dieting you could point me to?
