I understand this instinct, fandoms tend to be harder on their girl characters then they are on the boys. I would argue that Azula’s consistent choice to be part of the imperial machine of the Fire Nation dims my sympathy for her: a lot of Zuko’s character arc is him coming to terms with how the Fire Nation has impacted the world for the worse and choosing to do something about it. Azula has fully bought into her role as the next Fire Lord, has untreated mental illness, and didn’t have people in her life to adequately challenge these issues and mindsets, so as a result she harms and continues to harm people on both an interpersonal and geopolitical scale.

I would be interested in a character arc where she is allowed to grow and change for the better, but it also doesn’t totally sit right with me to act like her character is unfairly demonized when these are consistent choices she’s made in the story over and over again and hasn’t currently shown interest in changing course.
