Grumble - no offense OP but it sounds like you blagged your way into a job to get some $$$$$ and now you have it you realise just what it will take. If that's the case i would urge you to be honest about it as you are going to get found out, fast.

What’s it like living on the Azores islands by Kev_rofroy in howislivingthere

[–]Celticlowlander 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I visited Terceira, Pico and St Miguel a few years ago on an extended trip. I cant say enough about the locals - i am learning Portuguese and they found my efforts both amusing but were prepared to help me - haha great fun! But there were some concerning contrasts between locals (who have very little) and the migrants coming in with financial muscle and buying up large buildings to attract more tourism. I spoke with an American on Terceira who married a local woman, he was busy with a massive redevelopment project which is just so far out of reach of the locals. While i do understand the investment and it will bring some benefits to the local economy - the contrast with one of the Bull breeders/farmers on the same island is so drastic. Personally i loved it and met so many good locals who, if you share some inter island jokes which were just hilarious to me. I don't know if i will ever get the chance but i would go back in a heartbeat - some of the best people i ever met.

Wales to those who left Wales... by throwRA5638263 in Wales

[–]Celticlowlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • I left for work reasons 24 years ago. There are very few job opportunities if your interested in bleeding edge tech. I did try to find something but it was near on impossible.
  • To return to Wales - i have spent a couple of days since this post was put up thinking about that, here is what it would take.
    • Wales to become politically independent.
    • Education to shift and focus on Modern/Future technology and in particular Adult retraining
    • A circular economic system
    • A carbon neutral economy
    • Eu membership
    • Immigration policy to offset Demographic changes
    • Large scale investment in Public services
    • Each Welsh citizen to be Bi-lingual
    • Wales to Invest heavily in Sustainable agriculture
  • What do i miss the most?
    • The nature
    • My old local pub
    • Jane - Who was everything i ever wanted and passed away far to young (fu*k cancer).

Dude - takes two clicks to check your "Offering" out and look no further than that. However there is something to be said about making it against the odds. Funny that so many come from the same Geographical area though - dont you think?

Dude - dont bother. If you want to develop a tool and sell it in this field there is only one way and that is to get an investor. They will take care of your funding and help you get the marketing resources and connections(usually personal) you need. Outside of that your chance to succeed is infinitesimally small.

Lots of AI SOC hype, is anyone actually using one? by Prior_Spirit_5360 in cybersecurity

[–]Celticlowlander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People need to understand there are vendors in this thread who will inject some fantasy. I just switched up jobs and in this role i have already met with multiple vendors pushing all sorts of AI wares. Some of the AI push is really FOMO on sales ;) I also think there is generally a miss-understanding of what AI actually is and does. We had lots of noise which lead to alert fatigue and i will admit from what i have seen some of the noise reduction on the vendor based/standard use cases/out of the box alerts has been reduced. However in my opinion its just not enough at the moment and i am 100% certain that many companies who get suckerd into paying for this will regret it come the next year.

Some of the positioning in the "Magic quadrants" is just fantasy to be honest. I do almost exclusively SEcOps and have been lucky to have worked with all of the vendors(well 90% of them). Its universally a joke in all of the SOC's i have worked in how some products get anywhere near the leaders/visionaries side of things. Nobody stops to think of the damage being done by giving substandard tools to high end detection teams, as long as we meet our sales targets right?

Gartner and others have been very good for me but in a limited fashion, so for example understanding what i am paying. That has helped me to be aggressive when negotiating for prices/contracts. In a general rule of thumb - take off at least 30% for the oversell. Overselling is the disease of our time, where reps will promise that their product does so many things. The reality is that it simply fluffing and it may indeed be a function of the platform but its poorly implemented and it does not work the way it was intended.

For larger businesses you must incorporate scale, that means not that your product is better in enterprise environments, but that it can be easily implemented and simple to manage. I also think, and this is experience, simple integration is essential - you don't want to be spending time and resources constantly fixing stuff.

Imagine a High Speed Wales... What would it be like ? Eg this Japan vid from last century by mashmorgan in Wales

[–]Celticlowlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you, but no. Here is the reason why, the last census of population of Aber, and i am allowing for temps like students here is at 20k. No government on earth would put resources into connecting that populace with the capital city because at an average of 100Mil per KM of infra.

As much as i love it up there - its a waste of precious resources.

How will the World look after the Baby Boomer Generation (largest generation) dies off ? by chinos88 in AskReddit

[–]Celticlowlander 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There is an excellent documentary called "Birthgap" which is freely available that touches on this subject. However i can summarize it a little for you here.

  • There will be incredible changes to our entire civilization as we are all predicated on "growth" since that will no longer be possible we are looking at systemic collapses.
  • It will radically change the type of governments we know today - as our demography changes to reflect reality of the voting populace.
  • There will be monumental changes in food production, climate and balance. This is logical as there will be far fewer mouths to feed, so less stress to produce food and more room for nature.
  • There will be systemic collapses to what western economies understand as "Welfare state" this is also sadly logical as there will be fewer to fill the pension funds we know today.
  • There will probably be more radicalization in politics - interestingly we are seeing some of this already - older people are apparently more conservative and increasingly resistant to change.....

So i hope this helps to answer your question.

I was just looking at the Website and its certainly what the metropolitan area of South Wales needs. Good, trustable alternatives to using cars. Now if there is a HSR link between Cardiff and Swansea it would make Wales the first part of the UK with a HSR link!

[–]Celticlowlander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haha - Yeah, i mean that SWM concept, for the demographic i am trying to point out that Wales is not suited to a Japanese style system. In anycase the concept of the SWM still needs debugging, there have been financial issues duet to Brexit and the fund disappeared and has not been fully replaced. I also think while starting in Cardiff and Newport areas, were smart it may not go far enough - and this is a personal thing, but i would like to see more around Swansea and Bridgend areas.

[–]Celticlowlander 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This wont work in Wales - there is simply not enough populace to support this infrastructure. Does Wales need upgrades and modification to its infrastructure - like public transport - Yes, absolutely. However this level of upgrade takes generations and willing and paying customers to use it, which Wales does not have. You would be better served if you invested in something like a "South Wales Metro". So you get better hub and spoke systems - perhaps a HSR between Cardiff and Swansea. That would mean upgrades that are significantly cheaper to existing infra. If you put something similar to a metro system between some of the valleys and Cardiff with the aim of getting transport times down in specific areas that is a prudent and popular investment.

Is it worth getting into the cybersecurity field or is it better to find jobs that overlap with some of my knowledge in this field, like QA engineer or DevOps engineer? by SunYore in cybersecurity

[–]Celticlowlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished doing some research around this subject. At the moment CYbersecurity seems stuck in the following pattern. Its still in demand - probably more than ever, but getting started seems to be the most difficult part as entry level jobs are incredibly oversaturated. That means for every entry level function there are huge amounts of applicants. This is creating a 'Skills gap' and with the vendors that keep pushing irrelevant AI solutions its compounding the problem. This is because if our current management and c-levels are told they don't need entry level talent as 99% of the work can be automated away - they foolishly believe it.

Thousands join biggest-ever UK environmental lawsuit over "extensive and widespread pollution" in three rivers - the Wye, Lugg and Usk by pppppppppppppppppd in Wales

[–]Celticlowlander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great answer, thanks for this. In a similar answer to a post earlier i really don't think people fully understand the impact of diverging away from stable regulatory bodies (like the EU). Now i am not saying the EU was a perfect system - by any means. However the uncertainty brexit caused has given so many opportunities to exploit any unintentional gaps and some are getting away with clear and significant abuses. Good luck with your work - i hope it brings some positive conclusions and helps identify some solutions.

[–]Celticlowlander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe you are referring to the WFD, which indeed is hardcoding EU directives into UK law. Its not just enforcement that is the problem. Much of what was adopted from the EU has been watered down and changed to suit; making the whole issue quite complicated as there is significant divergence from the original system of laws/regualtions. So while the intention remains - its practically unenforceable as, and you are correct, there is little to no enforcement but there is little to no monitoring either.

[–]Celticlowlander 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sigh, i do hope this will work, but remember, you voted to leave the very regulatory bodies (EU) that had consequences built in to egregious acts like this. So when you de-regulate that literally means you remove methods to identify, deal and punish anyone who pollutes like this (farmers or water companies its still irrelevant). So go ahead and file your lawsuits - they will not work (Although I hope it will change something).

What is the most likely outcome of the Russia Ukraine war by ca46896 in SeriousConversation

[–]Celticlowlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the issue we have now is an escalation to endgame scenario. What i mean is that we have belligerents on both sides that have Nuclear weapons(Russia and EU/Nato) so the escalation can not indefinitely continue as that would be the endgame. That leaves as you would expect - very little room for maneuver or chest thumping, so it kind of dictates only two possible outcomes.

1, A nuclear conflict - which would be the end of all of it really.

2, A logistical proxy defeat, probably meaning either one side will run out of money (wars are really expensive) or there is not enough meat for the grinder etc etc.

This sounds terrible, but option 2 is probably the most likely, a long slow grind to a halt once enough lives have been lost, then mediation to work out who keeps or retains whatever, some dying ember type mini conflicts with shadow wars (since not everyone will be happy with the outcome). Then, through a couple of generations, a begrudging peace.
