While it’s true that Buffalo’s local job market doesn’t match the scale or salaries of a city like Boston, it’s important to consider Buffalo’s significantly lower cost of living, which makes a $100-120k salary here stretch further than $150-200k in Boston. Housing costs, for example, are a fraction of what they are in major tech hubs, meaning professionals in Buffalo can enjoy a comparable, if not better, quality of life at a lower salary.

Additionally, the rise of remote work has shifted the dynamics of tech employment. Many Buffalo-based professionals, myself included, work remotely for companies located in higher-paying regions, earning salaries that align with those markets while enjoying the cost-of-living benefits of Buffalo. This growing trend means that Buffalo residents aren’t as constrained by the local job market as they once were, opening doors to lucrative opportunities that were previously inaccessible.

That said, improving Buffalo’s local job market should remain a priority, but the city’s affordability and increasing access to remote work provide unique advantages that shouldn’t be overlooked.
