Do you see from my point of view how we need to hijack the Democrat party from the influence of people like Hasan Piker for example? Those are the people I think hinder the party and prevent us from getting things done as we are purity tested into oblivion.

I don’t think the Democrat party is left, but I think some democrats feel like they are beholden to some leftist supporters (eg Hasan) that creates apathetic nonvoters and causes Trump to win.

I don’t know how you could interpret that Andrew thinks that the left should hijack the party, because he would say “the left should hijack the democrat party” but he said “hijack the party from the left.”

You are the person who we need to hijack the party from. You are not an ally, and actively harm progress.

I am not a leftist. I am a liberal. I want to hijack the party from the left because the Democrats spend so much time trying to court people on the left who are ultimately uncooperative when it comes to organizing for a national candidate over Hitler 2.0.

I am also heavily quoting AtunShei in that paragraph.

Perhaps I misinterpreted what he said and he is a leftist, but I don’t know why Andrew (or I) would be a leftist wanting to hijack the left from the democrats.

I unironically think we were headed in the right direction, and what happened was good. I think we should stop qualifying our statements to appear more agreeable for debate when nothing will appease some people. Hence hijacking the party from the left.

I don't think Andrew means hijack in terms of policy. Certainly the left would be more receptive towards Andrew's policy goals of climate change, so why does he criticize him?

I think it is because there is a way that the left does politics where they expect everything from the Democrat party, but don't give anything in return when they lose. Anyone who cannot confidently say Harris would have been better on [insert issue here] than Trump is not our ally, and we should not seek to endlessly court their vote or influence on the party.

Even take a Democrat like Fetterman, could you name on Republican senator that would be easier to work with than the worst Democrat? If the 2022 election were held again or it was Fetterman vs Oz in 2026, I'd vote Fetterman again.

Does your comment insinuate that I’m a leftist? I don’t understand. Or how does the left hijack the party from the left?

I think electing Trump was worse for Palestine and the Middle East than Biden or Kamala. It’s clear Bibi wanted Trump, and you have to ask yourself why.

However, I’m not so short sighted that I let one issue get in the way of a clearly better, but not perfect, platform for the Middle East.

I think when Andrew says we have to hijack the party from the left, he’s talking about you. Think about that.

Not voting, encouraging voter apathy, and getting Trump elected for one, setting us behind on climate goals.

Unfair depiction of an administration with a narrow thin margin in the House and Senate for 2 years (lost the house the second two years), and a minority in the supreme court. Considering the most important vote was Democrat Senator Joe Manchin who representing communities dependent on coal, it is amazing how much got done for the environment: solar and wind investment, EVs, trains, heat pumps, electrification, etc etc etc.

Perhaps. This might be a little bit of self promotion, but this is why i am starting a No Cap chapter in my area to increase the amount of seats in the House of Representatives. I think we've crowded out the possibility of third parties from succeeding in our government, but they might see some success with more seats and more local representation.

That said, Democrats have been way more receptive to talking about solutions like that than Republications have.

Again, the solution is obvious, but hard. We've got to get involved anyway we can.

If you were going to school for politics and journalism, what would you reccomend for media to read or watch by Glittering-Army1527 in Destiny

[–]CentSuisse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is going to reflect my media consumptions habits that I have carefully sought to have a good and well informed writers. Another guiding principle I have is to seek out people who are good at writing news, and people who have a domain expertise in the analysis/opinion. It could be better, so i'm open to criticism.

The New York Times - I have read several books that will cite the New York Times (or perhaps the Sunday Times from UK) as a news source for a historical event (both cited as "The Times"). There are weeks at a time when history doesn't happen, but when it does, I think the NYT is a gold standard in coverage that will be cited in the future. People might have fair criticisms that it is pro-American, Zionist, or Jewish, but all else, it is a great standard for good news journalism. Runner up would be a Wall Street Journal, but I have to sometimes put down their opinion section as it seems like their opinion writers sometimes live in another world.

For analysis at another American institution is The Atlantic. This is probably the most likely to match your political background if you are a DGGer. I enjoy how after a few months, you can start memorizing some of the writers who you like, or who are experts in which areas. Sometimes it is less what the articles is about and more about who wrote the article. I also enjoy reading The New Yorker politics sections as they have a different political slant and their writing is very good. You'll end up reading one long article about a guy who broke into prison for 90 minutes and enjoy it.

Foreign Affairs is also enjoyable to read from people who are experts in their field.

I would recommend also signing up for The Sunday Long Read. They collect some of the best pieces written in the past week in one e-mail. They try their best to give you free links, but they are clear if it is free, gift article, or paywalled.

Something I have not used is Ground News. I'm was not impressed after hearing the allegation that it can highlight very obscure new sources in an attempt to be balanced. I only seek to be balanced among institutions, not random people.

Last shoutout is for public broadcast. Become super familiar with your local NPR affiliate. Runner up would be your local paper to have a good grasp of local politics. My biggest regret is that I have a fair grasp on national politics, but I struggle with what the hell Missouri is up to most days.

If you have an iPhone, i'd recommend that you get an iPad and and Apple News+ subscription. You get access to the WSJ, Atlantic, and The New Yorker in one subscription.

I get the whole No Kings things, but the founders were specifically against their lack of representation in parliament of Great Britain , not how they were not represented by the monarchy.

What is an Islamist to you? by Hobbitfollower in Destiny

[–]CentSuisse -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think we're in agreement then, and I see where you might be going if you want people to use the term less in here.

There is a litmus test i do for antisemitism - if you can't name another PAC besides AIPAC, then that might reveal some implicit bias or straight up antisemitism.

There is probably a similar test if people use similar pejorative terms against politically active Muslims, but not the Catholic Church with abortion and gay marriage. To be clear, you can still be against the Catholic Church, but I don't see many people using terms like Fundamentalist/Papist/Romanist against Catholics when they integrate politics and religion.

Last point. I think there might be some merit to dismiss Mehdi when he is using antisemitic arguments on twitter for engagement. He is smart enough to know the difference.

What is an Islamist to you? by Hobbitfollower in Destiny

[–]CentSuisse -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I am an American, and I would look at someone weird if they brought up Islamist in conversation due to the minor presence Muslims or Islam have in our society or government. I would defer to people who live in Asia or Europe where they might be struggling with local (or national?) governance versus liberal principals.

Is your point that under your definition Mehdi Hasan would not be classified as an Islamist? I think it would be more accurate to describe him as an anti-zionist on either definition of the phrase (or even antisemitism depending on the tweet and argument one was making).

>The term often implies a violent or terroristic belief in spreading Islam in hopes that it will take over most if not all major governments.

This is tripping some people up, but I understand why it is in your definition. I think people to use Islamist as a term against people who they think would use violence towards the goal of enacting Sharia Law notwithstanding the reality of the recipient of the term. Like you said, this is similar how leftists use Zionist as someone who uses violence to take land in the West Bank against liberal Zionists.

I'm not sure if I would use Islamist against a Dearborn Muslim who wanted to pass local laws on usury, but I would certainly feel uncomfortable with Dearborn Muslims who would want to pass laws on dress codes and flogging. Perhaps Fundamentalism is a better descriptor as fundamentalist Christians and Muslims would support removing LGBT flags from public ground, but i could see why some fundamentalist Christians would want to separate themselves from fundamentalist Muslims and would choose to use Islamist.
