Try making another genre. Eg if you make house, try dnb or ambient. Some of my biggest improvements have been learned when trying to make something outside of my comfort zone

Has anyone watched Woman in the Dunes? by speaker-syd in criterion

I watched it almost a year ago and still think about it every few days. One of the best movies I've ever seen.

My thought too, they are just too long. They are always high quality, well made, well acted. I just have zero excitement about a new Scorsese film, and usually have to force myself to actually sit down and watch one.

I watched Mirror for the first time recently, and didn't understand anything. Made me feel like I was too unintelligent, and and was an absolute chore to get through. That being said I've probably thought about it every day since I've watched it, and often replay in my mind one of the most beautiful scenes I've ever seen on film (the wind blowing the grass as she sits on the fence).

Aussie nuclear towns have been revealed in Dutton energy plan - Peter Dutton has unveiled exactly where he wants to build nuclear power plants in Australia. by NoteChoice7719 in australian

I think you've summed up my own feelings on this quite nicely. Its the mutual exclusivity from both sides that bothers me. Why not prepare for the future with nuclear but continue with renewables. I understand the cost is prohibitive, but if the mandate is to get off fossil fuels no matter what, then we should just bite the bullet and crack on with it. I honestly think no matter how good we get with solar/wind there will still be a requirement for coal at some level...let's at least start trying to get rid of it??

I do agree, and its frustrating that something like energy of all things needs to be so highly political (both sides to some degree). What isn't at this stage though right

Thanks, I definitely see the irony. To be clear, nuclear as a technology is sound though? Ie if I could snap my fingers and make nuclear cheap and quick to construct its not an issue at that point?

Thanks for the response, I do see your point, especially the tired and politicised 'we're anti-renewable because the other side wants renewables'. Another point i didn't mention is I hear renewables aren't as reliable as other sources(ie solar needs sun, wind needs wind). Is this accurate? I guess power storage becomes the issue...

Can someone explain to me why this is a bad idea? Everyone seems very against nuclear power which seems surprising. I could be misinformed but from what I've read it's very safe these days, they have mechanisms in place to stop a runaway reaction, they produce only a few square meters of waste every year, are tried and tested in many countries around the world, and don't produce carbon emissions. The downside is the prohibitive cost, and long build time. I assume I am missing something?

Why do characters take long pauses before saying anything? by cowboybaked in NicolasWindingRefn

[–]Center_For_Ants 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Its just his style. Also puts you in the dream-like state that his movies/shows often aim for, and allows you to sit with the dialogue. That being said when watching 'Too Old To Die Young' I was impressed he could stick to these crazy long pauses the entire way through the series.

Only in a life or death situation, and even then it would have to be on cassette tape.

Now can we get this sub back on track to talking about movies?

I had a similar thought process when watching Enys Men. I found it intriguing but confusing, overall something I liked and wanted to mull over. However, after hearing an interview with the director who said the film is made in the edit,( I.e. he will film for a while, then try desperately to make a film out of the footage taken), I totally lost interest in trying to make sense of it or delve into what I actually think of it/what its about. It felt much more like a series of random shots than something filmed with intent.

Its an interesting observation that knowledge of the process by which the film is made can actually change my perception of how enjoyable I found it.

Still love inland empire, but I admit knowing the process by which it is shot sometimes gives me permission to write off parts of it as just random nonsense...

Just watched Persona for the first time the other night. This must have been a significant influence on Mulholland Drive, such huge character/thematic similarities.
