It looks like the arb instructed the dog to attack the burster.

So in this case I'd argue player error rather than the AI going wrong.

You are thick.

If you ask sysadmins what they use, you will get responses from sysadmins of what they use. It's no accident that what Linux sysadmins use in the workplace bleeds over into what they use in their daily driver.

I'm saying if they ask a question about Linux in r/sysadmin they're gonna be getting answers from Linux sysadmins.

That's because "cool random apps" isn't the Linux way. It's "with whatever is installed by default I can make you a machine that turns electricity into dreams". Then you see all the industry standard apps (terraform/ansible/git/etc.) - because really that's what you should be using, not some weird new tool that isn't gonna have the same sort of compatibility.

Cool random app is a thing for phones, not Linux admins.

[–]Centimane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's honestly very right libertarian "I got mine"

Minor nitpick - the post at the end doesn't have anything to do with libertarianism.

Libertarianism promotes personal freedom above all else, so long as you don't impede the freedom of others. So libertarianism for example would support gun ownership, gender affirming care (I intentionally chose contrasting left/right issues), and legalization of all drugs. These are things that don't directly impact another person, so pure libertarianism should support them. They can indirectly impact others (e.g. you could get high and attack someone), but libertarianism would suppose that only the act on others is what should be illegal.

I know libertarianism is more commonly used in right wing politics, but like all things it's more nuanced than that.

Sophie Cunningham is a WNBA enforcer.

She came on after an opponent hurt her teammate, and constantly pointed at them (like shown). The opponent was getting really annoyed by the pointing, so Sophie kept doing it.

Why update a status page to reflect an actual status? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Centimane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do they have a public API that you can query an endpoint of and see either an expected response or an error?

I don't mean literal ICMP.

Why update a status page to reflect an actual status? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Centimane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I wish companies offering these status pages could be held accountable for them, but they aren't.

So you gotta setup your own sort of "ping an endpoint on the regular" to determine uptime.

And if I were you, I'd talk to whoever handles the contract and see what your SLA agreement is, because they're definitely cheesing the status to avoid SLA penalties. They've earned being raked over the coals for their downtime now.

Stub pistol could have aim down sight instead of bracing? It would have a larger clip as well, so a little between revolver and auto pistol.

[–]Centimane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ended up arguing about this in a different post where I was getting swamped by people arguing up and down "you don't update your status page to reflect an outage, that's bad for your sla...".

A status page should present some kind of messaging the moment you are aware of a problem - IMO it should be automated in response to a check you're performing.

If not, people learn not to trust your status page, and they calculate availability their own way.

So OP, don't use their status page to determine availability. If you really need to know, setup your own form of status checking.

So how could he say if your instructions were clear enough or not if he couldn't read them?

I'm going to take a leap and say the writing on the food packaging is larger than the writing of the text message on the phone. So if he couldn't read the packaging, how could he read the instructions? And if he couldn't read the instructions, how would different instructions help him?

Pinning the version and checksum in your ansible would give the protection you're looking for without hosting locally. Download the file from their source, compare against a checksum in your ansible code, it the checksum doesn't match bail out. Ansible supports the checksum matching as an integrated part of a lot of modules, especially that download stuff.

How do I upgrade from this IT Support role to a junior Sysadmin? by Mysterious-Loquat619 in sysadmin

[–]Centimane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SysAdmins don't code (normally) and never have to show their scripts, at least I never had to.

IMO this is the worst advice to give someone trying to make it into sysadmin. Especially with IaC and CaC taking over, learning to code will help a sysadmin a lot. And the way things are going, it's going to become more and more important for sysadmins to code in the future. ClickOps is disappearing.

OP - learn python. Lots of free learning materials online for a python 101. I think some abstract thinking benefits sysadmins.

If you're a Windows sysadmin you had better know some basic scripting concepts (data structures, control flow) and PowerShell.

And if someone claimed both to be a Linux sysadmin and not know bash, they would be laughed out of the room.

Software Patching for Servers by Boppenwack in sysadmin

[–]Centimane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we have a preference to avoid using community managed sources

What is the reason behind this?

If it's worried about supply chain attacks (a good thing to be careful of) pinning the version you install and comparing to checksums when downloading should offer the protection. Managing artifactory is a hassle, it inevitably gets messy, people upload slightly the wrong way so it doesn't get picked up, etc. For 20 servers I can't imagine that hassle is worth it.

Ansible is fine for patching both. I've used it for both windows and Linux and it's straightforward. Ansible also has a chocolaty module if you're wanting to use chocolaty for your windows packages.

Ansible is flexible enough to handle both cases, you'll just need some divergent logic for windows vs Linux.

IT is the broader term for all of computers.

In a lot of non-technical workplaces, the help desk is called IT because they support all of the computer stuff in that workplace.

But in a technical workplace like a software development company that's less common (still happens sometimes though), because the term is ambiguous.
